PHILADELPHIA – In partnership with Temple's Athletic Training Education Program, the Temple University Athletics Department hosted an event celebrating the 27th Annual National Girls and Women in Sports Day (NGWSD) on Monday, Feb. 4 at the Temple Pavilion.
Dozens of local girls in eighth grade and under participated in the event, which was a rousing success with fun had by all. Nearly all of the women's sports programs at Temple ran a mini-clinic, and the girls participating rotated through each station throughout the two and half hour event. The stations included field hockey, gymnastics, fencing, cheer and dance, rowing, track and field, volleyball, lacrosse and soccer.
The event was sponsored at Temple by a grant from the National Athletic Trainers' Association (NATA) Ethnic Diversity Advisory Committee, and was one of more than 1,000 taking place in all 50 states. Temple women's basketball head coach Tonya Cardoza was the keynote speaker, and talked to the entire group about what it means for women to have opportunities in sports.
Dr. Margo Greicar, the Athletic Training Education Program Director, spearheaded the planning of the event. “It was brought to our attention last year that it had been a long time since Temple hosted a National Girls and Women's Sports Day event,” said Greicar. “We knew there was an opportunity to get a grant through the NATA Ethnic Diversity Advisory Committee, so we seized the opportunity and pitched the idea. Once we earned the grant, we contacted athletics. It's a natural partnership for our two groups to sponsor an event like this.”
“We're feeling pretty good now that the day is finally here,” said Dr. Jamie Mansell, the Clinical Education Coordinator for Athletic Training Education. “The initial thought about the grant was that we could bring athletics in, and sports that the girls in this neighborhood might not have seen before and show them that there are opportunities and there are ways to stay healthy. For me, seeing all the girls come in here today and get so excited, and watching their faces, that's really what this was about.”
NGWSD is officially celebrated on Feb. 6, with community-based events, award ceremonies, and activities honoring the achievements and encouraging participation of girls and women in sports. For more information, visit the NGWSD website at: http://www.aahperd.org/nagws/programs/ngwsd/History.cfm.
