NOTE: Wednesday's home-opener at Skip Wilson Field against Lafayette has been pushed to a 3:30 p.m. start
FARMVILLE, Va. – Playing its final game before making its home debut, Temple Baseball fell 9-6 to the Longwood Lancers at Bolding Stadium on Tuesday afternoon. With the game tied at four and the first two batters put away in the fifth inning, Longwood's Brandon Delk hit a ball toward third. Instead of being an inning-ending groundout, senior third baseman Elijah Yarborough misfired the throw to junior Derek Peterson at first, allowing Scott Burkett to score and give the Lancers the lead for good.
The Owls got off to a quick 3-0 lead in the first inning, but were unable to stop the Lancers' big second inning at bat, where they put up a three spot of their own. After Temple went in front 4-3 in the top of the fourth, Longwood responded by scoring in each of the next four innings, highlighted by the three unearned runs scored in the fifth inning.
Freshman Frank D'Agostino had his best game since putting on a Cherry & White uniform, as he went 3-for-4 with two RBIs and a run scored, while senior Jordan Queja and sophomore Nick Lustrino each extended their on-base streaks to 16 and 12, respectively.
Making his fourth start of the season, senior lefty Dan Moller was lifted after the third inning with the game tied at three in relief of redshirt sophomore Zach White, who was credited with loss.
Longwood tacked on a run in the sixth and seventh—both coming off sophomore Adam Dian— to extend its lead to five runs, making it 9-4.
The Owls worked to trim the deficit. In the eighth inning D'Agositino delivered his second RBI of the game with his base hit into center field to score Peterson, who led the frame off with his single into right. Freshman Andrew Nist, who was 2-for-4 on the day with a pair of RBIs, narrowed the gap to a three-run Longwood advantage by looping a single into center to score redshirt sophomore pinch runner Connor Reilly.
Temple drops to 3-9 on the year as it heads home to Ambler to open the home portion of its 2013 schedule with Wednesday's 3:30 p.m. first pitch against the Lafayette Leopards (2-9) at Skip Wilson Field. The Owls will send junior right-hander Matt Hockenberry to the mound, where he will be opposed by left handed freshman Ari Kaufman.
