BROOKLYN, NY -- Third-seed Temple (23-8) will take on sixth-seed Massachusetts (20-10) Friday night (9:00 p.m./CBS Sports Network Regional (The Comcast Network local/1210 AM WPHT) in the quarterfinals of the 2013 Atlantic 10 Conference Championship presented by Buick at the Barclays Center.
It is only fitting that Temple opens with UMass in its final appearance in the A10 tournament as the two programs are synonomous with the league's success. The Owls have won a record nine A10 championships with UMass having the next most titles with five. The Minutemen won five in a row under former head coach John Calipari from 1992 thru 1996 and defeated the Owls, under Hall of Fame coach John Chaney in the title game in the last four of that run.
The game is a also a rematch of last year's quarterfinal game won by the Minutemen, 77-71. Temple defeated UMass, 83-82 in Amherst, in the only meeting this season. Senior guard Khalif Wyatt led Temple with 24 points in the contest. The game ended a five-game stretch of one-point games by the Owls, which is believed to be a NCAA record.
Wyatt, who will receive his A10 Player of the Year trophy before the game, leads the A10 in scoring with a 19.9 average. He also tops the Owls and ranks seventh in the conference in assists (4.1 apg.).
Senior forward Scootie Randall (11.8 ppg., 6.3 rpg.) and sophomore forward Anthony Lee (10,3 ppg., 7.1 rpg.) also average double figures for Temple, which enters play riding a season-best seven-game win streak.
UMass, which defeated 11th-seed George Washington, 77-72, in the first round of the A10 Championship Thursday night, is led by first team all-conference performer Chaz Williams. The Minuteman guard tops UMass in scoring (15.4 ppg.) and the A10 in assists (7.6 apg.).
Senior forward Terrell Vinson (12.6 ppg.) averages double figures while senior guard Freddie Riley (8.6 ppg.) is one of the top three-point shooters in the conference (62-168, .369).
The winner will take on the winner of #2-seed VCU vs. #10-seed Saint Joseph's on Saturday at 4:00 p.m.
