Baseball Wins in the 9th Inning to Continue Winning Streak Against Lehigh

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Temple Baseball rallied in the ninth inning to score four runs to improve their season long winning streak to four games at Goodman Campus on Wednesday afternoon. The Owls won the game, 11-8 over Lehigh behind strong performances at the plate from right junior Derek Peterson and fielder Bobby Heitzman.
The Owls scored four runs on two hits and three errors committed by the Mountain Hawks during the top of the ninth inning. Junior Derek Peterson led the Owls with a double to right field scoring the Owls tenth run to add to their lead. Senior Henry Knabe reached on an error committed by the pitcher allowing D'Acunti to score the game winning run.
Clean-up hitter Derek Peterson provided most of the offense as he batted 4-for-5 in the win scoring three runs helping the Owls to secure their seventh win on the season. The junior now has 21 hits and 16 runs on the year.
Right-handed pitcher Matt Hockenberry pitched 4.1 innings allowing two earned runs on six hits in his fourth start of the season. The junior struck out five batters in the no decision.
Sophomore Adam Dian came into relieve red-shirt senior Steve Visnic to notch his first win on the season. The native from Gibsonia, Pa. got the final two batters of the inning to ground out in his fourth appearance of the year.
Lehigh scored the first run of the game on an RBI single up the middle by junior Tyler Brong that scored freshman Mike Garzillo. After allowing the first run of the game, the Owls bounced back with three runs in the top of the 2nd inning to take the lead.
Junior Bobby Heitzman drove in the first run for TU with a single. The right fielder went 2-for-5 scoring two runs and knocking in three runs. Heitzman made his third consecutive start for the Owls and fourth consecutive appearance during the four game winning streak.
Shortstop Nick Lustrino singled up the middle in the fourth inning to extend his on base streak to 16 consecutive games as he has reached base safely in every game this season.
Freshman Michael A'Cunti started his 10th career game behind the dish for the Owls and hit his first career home run to right center in the fourth inning. It was only the freshman's third RBI of the season.
Red-shirt junior Ryan Kuehn appeared in his second consecutive game as he recorded his first save for the 2013 season.
After winning their last four games, the Owls are now 7-9 on the year and will have one day off before they return home to play their first Atlantic 10 conference game against city St. Joseph's on Friday. First pitch is scheduled for 3:00 p.m. at Skip Wilson Field.
