URI's Roy Proves To Be Too Much For Baseball In 3-1 Loss

4.20.13 | Baseball

KINGSTON, R.I. – A day after being held scoreless by Rhode Island, head coach Ryan Wheeler shuffled Temple's lineup for the middle game of the weekend set. Other than a first inning run, the Owls' offense was limited for a second-straight game, as they were dealt a, 3-1, loss from the Rams on Saturday afternoon at Bill Beck Field. URI leadoff hitter Jeff Roy scored all three runs for the Rams and went 4-for-4 off sophomore right-hander Eric Peterson (5-1) to give the Owls' starter his first loss of the season. RHP Sean Purney (5-3) took the win and Brad Applin notched his first save for URI.

Following his three-hit day in the series opener, senior Allen Stiles was bumped from the No. 8 hole to the second spot in the order. The Owls' center fielder picked up right where he left off by ripping a double in the first inning. He would go on to finish the day 2-for-4 with Temple's only run scored.

It looked as if the lineup change was bringing instant offense. With Stiles aboard, redshirt senior Matt Elko smacked a base hit and sophomore Nick Lustrino was issued a walk to jam the bases for freshman Andrew Nist, who got TU on the board with his hit up the middle that scored Stiles from third.
Temple would go on to pound out nine hits off of URI pitchers Furney and Applin, but would be unable to push another run home for the remainder of the contest.

URI wasted no time responding. In the bottom half of the first inning, Roy led off with  ingle and then stole second base before Quinn's base hit up the middle brought him in to match the Owls' output.

Roy scored an unearned run in the fifth to put the Rams on top in the fifth and provided an insurance run in the seventh.

Peterson threw a season-high 131 pitches in 7.0 innings of work for a fourth consecutive quality start. In his outing, he struck out eight hitters, walked one, served up a season-high nine hits that led to two earned runs.  The loss for Peterson (5-1) is only the second setback in his Cherry and White career.

Junior Derek Peterson, who was bumped from the cleanup spot to the leadoff spot, produced a multi-hit game, going 2-for-5 against URI pitching. Elko took over the cleanup hole and had a two-hit day of his own.

Temple (14-19, 5-9 A-10) will close out the weekend set against URI (21-17, 8-3 A-10) and look to salvage a win in the series finale Sunday at 12:00 p.m.
