Baseball Loses 6-2 Against Rhode Island in Series Finale

4.21.13 | Baseball

KINGSTON, R.I. – After losing the first two games against Rhode Island, scoring only one run total, the Owls struggled again in the series finale to fall 6-2.  Other than two runs in the top halve of the second inning, Temple was held scoreless on Sunday afternoon at Bill Beck Field.  The game was tied entering the eighth inning when the Rams scored four runs off of junior right-hander Matt Hockenberry dropping his record to 1-2 on the season.

Senior south paw Dan Moller pitched a strong six innings as he battled to keep the Owls in the game.  The starter earned a no decision recording six strikeouts and only allowed two runs to cross the plate.

The Owls did not see much production from the dish on the offensive side of the ball.  Standing out for TU were senior Matt Elko and freshman Jimmy Kerrigan who both recorded two hits in four at-bats.  Elko scored his 11th run of the year as Kerrigan knocked in one run giving him six RBIs this season.  Jimmy Kerrigan extended his hit streak to six games as he has recorded multiple hits in three of the games as the freshman is becoming an integral part of the team.

Junior Matt Hockenberry relieved Moller in the seventh inning as he retired the side in order recording a strike out and two easy groundballs before the game started to unravel in the eighth.  URI recorded five consecutive hits off of the junior as it was capped by a two-run double by leadoff hitter Tim Caputo for the Rams.  Hockenberry finished the game pitching two innings and allowed four runs and two strikeouts in his 11th appearance of the 2013 season.

The Rams jumped out to an early lead in the first inning on a sacrifice fly to open the scoring (1-0) before the Owls answered back in the next inning as they scored two runs to take their only lead of the game, 2-1.  URI had three players record two hits on the day as shortstop Tim Caputo lead the team with one run scored and two RBIs where sealed the game for the Rams during their four-run eighth inning.

The Owls drop to 14-20 overall, and 5-10 in Atlantic 10 conference play as the Rams improve to 22-17 overall, 9-3 in the A-10 after taking all three games against TU.

After being swept by the Rams, the Owls return home looking to get back on track as they will play five games in six days beginning on Tuesday.  All games will be played at Skip Wilson Field with the first game scheduled for Tuesday, April 22nd at 3:00 p.m. against non-conference opponent Villanova.
