Six-Run Fourth Inning Propels Temple Past Villanova, 8-4

AMBLER,Pa. – Temple returned home today to face Big 5 opponent Villanova at Skip Wilson Field where Temple scored a season high six runs in the fourth inning to earn their 15th win of the season. The Owls beat the Wildcats 8-4 led by junior Derek Peterson and senior Elijah Yarborough from the plate.
First baseman Derek Peterson led the way for the Owls batting 3-for-5 while scoring two runs and knocking in two runs on the day. The junior transfer is now hitting .338 this season and leads the team with 48 hits. Second baseman Elijah Yarborough got his third straight start after senior Jordan Queja went down with an injury the past weekend. Yarborough had struggled previously this season as he only registered one hit in 27 at-bats before going 2-for-3 today with a deep triple to left field in his two RBI day from the plate.
Head coach Ryan Wheeler sent freshman Connor Staskey out to the mound to start the game for the Owls making his first collegiate start of his career. Staskey had appeared in 11 games prior to his start today. The left-hander pitched three strong innings allowing one unearned run in his effort. He allowed Villanova to have runners in scoring position in all three innings but has bend but do not break motto as he left four runners on base. Staskey struck out two batters in his outing today taking a no decision to keep his record at 3-0 this season.
The Owls used five pitchers in today's effort to seal the victory as Zach White recorded the win for Temple improving his record to 1-2. He pitched two innings and allowed one run. Red-shirt senior Steve Visnic was called to the mound out of the bullpen in the eighth inning to make his 97th appearance of his career, which saw him pitch one inning and allowed one run.
Villanova struggled to get runners to cross the plate in today's game as they left 14 total runners on base and had runners in scoring position in eight out of the nine innings. John Cialone was the only effective batter from the plate as he went 2-for-2 with two RBIs.
The Wildcats threatened late in the game as they hit three consecutive singles with two outs in the ninth inning before red-shirt junior Ryan Kuehn got the final batter of the ball game to fly out to third base.
The Owls opened the scoring in the first inning on a sacrifice fly from senior Henry Knabe that scored leadoff hitter Derek Peterson after he reached on a single and advanced to third after a balk from the starting pitcher for the Wildcats.
After Villanova tied the game in the third, Temple regained the lead in the fourth inning on a double by senior Matt Elko that plated Knabe.
Temple moves to 6-0 in non-conference games at home this season as they improve their overall record to 15-20. Villanova falls to 10-29 on the year. Temple will return home to play George Mason tomorrow afternoon at Skip Wilson Field. Scheduled to start for the Owls is junior Preston Hill making his first start since early March. First pitch is set for 3:00 p.m.
