Yarborough Goes Yard In Baseball's 9-5 Loss To George Mason

AMBLER, Pa. –
Continuing its current five-game homestand, Temple looked to build a two-game winning streak before opening conference play this weekend, but George Mason broke out of a seven-game losing streak in its opening game of an eight-game road swing, as it beat the Owls' by a count of 9-5 at Skip Wilson Field on Wednesday afternoon.

George Mason scored in each of the first three innings and it extended its lead to 7-0 before Temple got on the board in the home half of the seventh.

Senior Elijah Yarborough, who was recently anointed the team's everyday starter at second base when Jordan Queja's season came to an abrupt end (broken arm), put together his second-straight multi-hit game, including a big blast in the bottom of the seventh inning when he slammed a two-run home run to make it a 7-2 ballgame.

Yarborough had just one hit in his first 12 games this season. In the last two days, the New Brunswick, N.J. native has five hits and is hitting .714. Wednesday was the first three-hit game for the senior second baseman since early last season when he went 3-for-5 in the opening game of the series at North Carolina A&T (Feb. 24, 2012). The home run was the third of his Cherry and White career.

Temple's offense didn't get going until George Mason starting pitcher Tanner Love departed the game after going 6.1 innings, through which he struck out eight and gave up six hits. He was charged with freshman Andrew Nist's run that came on the Yarborough homer. With Mark Maksimow in the game for the Patriots, the Owls began generating run, as they tacked on runs in each of their final three innings to cut into George Mason's lead.

It was a matter of too little, too late, but Temple was threatening in the ninth. Down 9-3 to start the frame, Nist led off with a single before Yarborough connected on a pitch for a one-out base hit, setting junior Derek Peterson up with an RBI double. For the second straight day, the Owls' first baseman pounded out a 3-for-5 game, which helped put him atop for the team lead in hitting (.347). With two men in scoring position for the first time all day, senior Allen Stiles lifted a sacrifice fly to right field to score Yarborough. The threat ended on a groundout by senior Henry Knabe.

Junior Preston Hill made his first start since March 10. The Patriots greeted him immediately with a leadoff home run by Josh Leemhuis on the first pitch of the game. It would be the only run GMU would get in the opening frame, but would go on to put up a pair of three-spots in the next two innings.

For the Owls, junior Matt Hockenberry was the one called on to take over for Hill, who went only 2.0 innings and took the loss. Hockenberry was ripped for four hits in his first inning of work, which led to three runs—two uncharged—but settled in and went on to throw 5.0 innings before freshman Tim McCarthy and redshirt sophomore Zach Batchelor pitched the eighth and ninth, respectively.

Temple, who loses to a non-conference opponent at home for the first time this season (6-1), now holds a 15-21 overall record. The Owls will look to improve on their 5-10 Atlantic 10 Conference mark this weekend when they continue the homestand and welcome the Charlotte 49ers to Skip Wilson Field for a three-game set, which will get underway Friday at 3:00 p.m.
