Bats Back Pat Peterson's Effort In Baseball's 8-3 Win Over Charlotte

4.26.13 | Baseball

AMBLER, Pa. – Sophomore lefthanded pitcher Patrick Peterson was backed by eight runs of support by his team's offense on Friday afternoon, as Temple won the opening game of its three-game Atlantic 10 Conference series with the Charlotte 49ers by a count of 8-3 at Skip Wilson Field.

Peterson cruised through the first four innings without allowing a hit, while the Owl's bats produced runs in three straight innings, including a four-spot in the home half of the fourth.  Charlotte started Tyler Barnette took the loss after being shelled for five runs before leaving the game with an apparent injury in the fourth inning.

Temple got its barrage underway in the second on junior Bobby Heitzman's base hit up the middle off Barnette to score Stiles, who got the rally started with a single. Freshman Jimmy Kerrigan was the next batter and knocked Heitzman in with his hit into left center to make it 2-0, Owls.

Sophomore Nick Lustrino picked up the offense where it left off when he drew a leadoff walk in the third inning before senior Henry Knabe got a three-hit day started to give the Owls their first two men on base with a single up the middle. Senior Allen Stiles extended Temple's lead to 4-0 when he slashed a two-out single through the left hole to bring in Lustrino and Knabe.

The Owls put the game away in the fourth inning. Senior Elijah Yarborough, who hit his way on base for a third straight game, got Temple's most productive inning underway with a leadoff hit. Junior Derek Peterson extended Temple's lead to 5-0 when he tripled down the right field line. Temple later added runs on hits by Lustrino, freshman Andrew Nist and redshirt senior Matt Elko.

After sitting for a long fourth inning, Patrick Peterson came out in the fifth and showed no signs of losing any luster, as he set the 49ers down in order.

Charlotte's offense came to life in the sixth, as it scored all three of their runs on a base hits by Shane Basen and Justin Seager

Temple wins the opening game of a series for the first time this season and improves to 16-21 on the year and to 6-10 in A-10 play, while the 49ers lose their third straight and fall to 24-19 and 8-5.  The Owls and 49ers will go back at it again on Saturday when the series resumes at 1:00 p.m. at Skip Wilson Field.
