Temple’s Defense Struggles In 9-3 Loss Against Charlotte
4.27.13 | Baseball
AMBLER, Pa. – Sophomore right handed pitcher Eric Peterson struggled on the mound in the second game of the weekend series on Saturday against Charlotte, allowing seven runs in six innings. Temple's ace did not receive much support from his defense, as the Owls committed four errors taking the loss by a count of 9-3 at Skip Wilson Field.
Peterson allowed the leadoff base runner for Charlotte to reach base in all six innings he pitched. Charlotte opened the scoring in the second inning as Justin Roland hit a RBI singled after a leadoff double by Tony Montalbano. The sophomore finished the game allowing a season high 13 hits and only two strikeouts. It is his first start that he did not record at least five strikeouts in the game. Peterson falls to 5-2 on the year after taking the loss in today's effort.
As there were not too many bright spots for the Owls on the day, senior left fielder Allen Stiles and junior catcher Andrew Nist led the Owls by recording two hits apiece. The hits by teammates increased their season total to 33 and 20 respectively. Stiles added a late inning run in a comeback effort increasing his runs scored to 16 on the year, which is fifth on the team.
Charlotte put the game away in the sixth inning as they scored a game high three runs in the inning on three hits including a double to right field by Justin Seager increasing the lead to 7-1. The 49ers scored in six different innings with six different batters scoring runs on the day. Right fielder Montalbano recorded a team high four hits in five at bats including two runs scored and one RBI.
Charlotte's starter John Hamilton was stellar in today's game as he kept the Owls bats silent pitching eight innings only giving up two runs on six hits. The left hander struck out six batters improving his record to 3-3 on the season.
Second baseman Elijah Yarborough started his sixth straight start of the season as he smashed an RBI double to center field extending his hitting streak to four consecutive games. The native North Brunswick, N.J. has only one hit prior to his most recent outburst in the last four games for the Owls.
Sophomore Nick Lustrino added to Temple's offense as he hit his third double of the season to right field that plated the first run for the Owls. Lustrino has 42 hits this season which ranks him third on the team behind Henry Knabe and Derek Peterson.
Redshirt sophomore Zach Batchelor entered in the game in the seventh inning as he pitched two innings only allowing one unearned run. The native from Monroe Township, N.J. made his eight appearance and recorded his 10th strikeout of the year.
Charlotte evens the weekend series at one heading into Sunday's 12:00 p.m. rubber match at Skip Wilson Field. Temple drops to 16-22 on the year and to 6-11 in A-10 play, while the 49ers win their first game after a three-game losing streak to improve to 25-19 and 9-5 in conference play.
