Baseball Unable To Overcome Charlotte’s Quick Start In 10-2 Loss On Sunday

AMBLER, Pa. – Charlotte opened the scoring early with five runs on five hits in the first inning off of starter Dan Moller. Reliever Steve Visnic entered the game in the third inning to keep the game within reach for the Owls, but they were unable to score runs early in the game as they fell to the 49ers by a score of 10-2 on Sunday.
Moller made his 10th start of the year. The left hander finished the game pitching 2.1 innings, allowing seven runs on four walks and eight hits. The senior is third on the team in innings pitched after the game with a total of 43 innings on the year.
The Owls were able to get a run on the board in the fifth inning when junior Derek Peterson recorded a RBI groundout to the shortstop after freshman Michael D'Acunti's double to right field that hit the wall. Peterson regained the team lead in runs batted in as he knocked in his 28th run of the year.
Freshman Jimmy Kerrigan and senior Allen Stiles led the Owls offensively as they batted 2-for-4. Kerrigan delivered Temple's second run of the game on a RBi single to center in the sixth inning.
Temple reliever Steve Visnic appeared in his 99th game of his career pitching 2.2 innings and striking out four batters.
Sophomore Adam Dian entered the game in the sixth inning and pitched three scoreless innings, allowing ony three runners to reach base. This was the sophomore's fifth scoreless appearance in his last six games.
Charlotte sent 10 batters to the plate, batting around the order, in the first inning. The 49ers played small ball to earn the victory, as 15 of their 16 hits were singles, including three bunt singles. Charlotte's starter Brock Hudgens, who has been the A-10 Pitcher of the Week for the last two weeks, pitched 5.1 innings. He improved to 5-0, as he allowed two runs and recorded five strikeouts.
The Owls were unsuccessful in earning the series win in the finale against Charlotte, dropping their overall record to 16-23 on the year and to 6-12 in A-10 play. Charlotte earns the series win and improves to 26-19 and 10-5 in conference play. Temple has one day off before traveling to play against Villanova on Tuesday with the first pitch scheduled to start at 3:15 p.m. in Plymouth Meeting.
