Temple Travels To Villanova For Midweek Game On Tuesday

PLYMOUTH TOWNSHIP, Pa. – Temple (16-23) visits Villanova at Villanova Ballpark in Plymouth Meeting on Tuesday for a non-conference matchup. The Owls are coming off a five-game homestand which saw the Owls go 2-3 last week after losing two of three games against Charlotte. Last Tuesday, these two teams played each other at Skip Wilson Field, where Temple beat the Wildcats 8-4 behind starter Connor Staskey. The backend of the home-home series between the clubs gets underway at 3:15 p.m.
Freshman Connor Staskey could get the start again this week as he his fourth on the team in ERA and is a perfect 3-0 on the year. The left hander has appeared in 12 games and only started one game, which was last week's start at home against Villanova. Staskey has 17 strikeouts in 16.1 innings of work on the mound.
First baseman Derek Peterson has recently taken the team lead with 54 hits and a batting average of .338, which is five points higher than teammate Henry Knabe. Peterson has provided most of the offensive production this season as he also leads the team in homeruns and RBIs with two and 28 respectively. Peterson is currently on a six game hitting streak as he enters play against Villanova.
Senior Elijah Yarborough has become the everyday second baseman for the Owls after Jordan Queja's injury. The senior recorded two multi-hit games last week including three runs scored and five runs batted in.
Villanova has struggled in the 2013 season as they are 11-32 overall this year. They are coming off a tough series where they were swept by Seton Hall at home. Villanova allowed seven runs or more in each game over the weekend. The Wildcats have been unable to capitalize in their home games as they are 6-17 at Villanova Ballpark.
Villanova has been unsuccessful in producing hits from the plate with only one player owning a batting average above .290 this season. Senior Tyler Sciacca has a .295 batting average which leads the Wildcats along with his team leading 14 doubles. The senior owns a .455 slugging percentage and 19 RBIs. Freshman Max Beermann has provided some offensive spark for the Wildcats as he hit five homeruns this season on 22 hits.
The pitching staff has pitched well this season led by Sophomore Josh Harris who owns a 3.29 ERA with a record of 4-5 on the year. The sophomore has pitched a team high 60 innings and recorded 42 strikeouts this season. Junior Pat Young is a strikeout pitcher as he has recorded 68 strikeouts this season I only 64.1 innings pitched. The right hander has been unable to get run production from his offense in his starts as he is only 1-5 on the year.
