Temple Returns Home For Midweek Games Against Villanova And George Mason

AMBLER, Pa.—Temple (14-20, 5-10) returns to Skip Wilson Field on Tuesday afternoon where it will host the Villanova Wildcats in a non-conference matchup.  The Owls are coming off a tough weekend set against Rhode Island where the Owls lost all three games.  Before entering the three-game set against Rhode Island, Temple had won three out of their last four games and will look to get back on track against Villanova.  Temple has played exceptionally well at home as they are 7-4 at Skip Wilson Field. 

The Owls will play the George Mason Patriots on Wednesday afternoon as well in game two of their five game home stand at Skip Wilson Field.  TU will look to get back in their winning ways against two conference opponents before returning to Atlantic 10 conference play this weekend.

Pitchers junior Preston Hill and freshman Connor Staskey are expected to start the games for the Owls.  Hill has started two games with six appearances overall.  The junior transfer has recorded a 3.42 ERA in 23.2 innings pitched along with 14 strikeouts.  Staskey is the only pitcher on the team with an undefeated record with wins (3-0).  The freshman has yet to start a game this year as he has posted a 4.05 ERA with 15 strikeouts.  Connor Staskey has pitched his last two appearances by throwing a scoreless inning in each.  His last appearance saw him strike out three batters in one inning of work against Rhode Island.

Third baseman Henry Knabe leads the Owls from the plate with a .346 batting average and is first on the team in RBIs (25).  Junior transfer Derek Peterson has powered the Owls as he leads the team with two homeruns and second on the team with 22 RBIs.  The native of Wall, N.J. is currently hitting .328 on the season. 

Senior second baseman Jordan Queja was hit by a pitch and suffered a hairline fractice on his throwing arm on Friday at Rhode Island, causing his Temple career to come to a premature end.  The senior was a bright spot in the Owls' lineup as the team's leadoff hitter, as he reached base safely in each of the first 28 games this season. Queja leads the team in runs scored and walks with 29 and 23, respectively.

Villanova Game Notes…
Villanova visits Ambler, Pa. coming off a win against Cincinnati, 12-4, on Sunday as it was their first win in eight games.  The Wildcats (10-28, 2-10) have struggled thus far this season and owns a record of 4-10 on the road. 

Villanova has been unsuccessful in producing hits from the plate with only one player owning a batting average above .300 this season.  Senior Tyler Sciacca has a .310 batting average which leads the Wildcats along with his team leading 12 doubles.  The senior owns a .478 slugging percentage and 17 RBIs.  Freshman Max Beermann has provided some offensive spark for the Wildcats as he hit four homeruns this season on 20 hits. 

The pitching staff has pitched well this season led by Sophomore Josh Harris who owns a 2.85 ERA with a record of 4-5 on the year.  The sophomore has pitched a team high 60 innings and recorded 42 strikeouts this season.  

George Mason Game Notes…
George Mason (13-28, 5-16) enters play losing its last six games against four different teams.  The Patriots has played nine out of their last 10 games at home as they start an eight game road trip starting with Temple in Ambler, Pa. 

Two juniors lead the Patriots offensively who lead the team in hits.  Blaise Fernandez and Tobin Tucker have recorded 60 and 55 hits with batting averages above .325 this season.  Both players have started all 41 games this season with Tobin Tucker leading the team with eight home runs. 

Junior Jake Kalish leads the team's pitching staff with the lowest ERA (3.52) in six starts.  The junior has pitched 30.2 innings thus far and has struck out 29 batters with eight walks.  Freshman Chris Payne is the team's most used relieve for the Patriots as he has appeared in 18 games all out of the bullpen.  Payne has pitched 21.1 innings and struck out 22 batters this season.  Freshman Mark Maksimov leads the team in wins with three as he has recorded 23.1 innings pitched in 16 appearances.
