Baseball Unable To Battle Back From Richmond's Four-Run Second Inning; Loses 6-1

5.3.13 | Baseball

RICHMOND, Va.— Starting left-handed pitcher Patrick Peterson just did not have his stuff on Friday and the Richmond Spiders took advantage of it, as they scored five runs off the southpaw in his short 2.0 innings of work, en route to a 6-1 win over Temple at Pitt Field.

Coming off of his three-hit game at Villanova on Wednesday, senior Henry Knabe reached base three more times with a 2-for-3 day, which included a walk, single and a double, but was left on all three times.

With one out in the first inning, Terrence Stanley ripped a pitch off Peterson up the middle and would later steal second base, setting himself up for the game's first run when Jacob Mayers delivered the RBI base hit.

Temple would respond when it came back to the dish. Senior Allen Stiles got the rally going with leadoff infield single nailed right at the Richmond first baseman. Playing small ball and trying to work the tying run around, senior Elijah Yarborough got the sacrifice bunt down to move Stiles into scoring position. Later in the frame, redshirt senior Matt Elko drove in the tying run to make it 1-1 on his RBI base hit. Elko advanced to second on the throw and was left stranded.

The Spiders would break away for good in the second inning when they put up a four-spot in the frame. Junior shortstop Mike Small, who is the brother of Owls' assistant coach Kevin Small, had the big blow with the bases loaded when he sliced a pitch just inside the right field line for a double that cleared the bases. Small ended up at third on the play courtesy of a mishap out in right field and would later score on Matt Zink's two-base hit.

Sophomore Adam Dian took over for the Owls when they took the field in the third. Dian pitched well in his relief outing, going a season-long 4.0 innings of work. Dian whiffed three hitters away on strikes and served up just one hit and two walks, which led to Richmond's fifth inning run.

Junior Preston Hill threw the last two innings for Temple and showed improvement from his last outing. Hill struck out two hitters and gave up just one hit.

Temple's overall record drops to 17-24, while its A-10 mark falls to 6-13. Richmond's Jonathan de Marte took Friday's series opening victory to improve to 4-0 on the year, as the Spiders are now 27-16 this season and 10-6 in league play.

The two teams will go at it again tomorrow at 2:00 p.m. for game two of the three-game set. The Owls will send sophomore righty Eric Peterson to the hill, where he will be opposed by Richmond's Andrew Blum.
