PHILADELPHIA - Temple field hockey held its annual awards banquet on Saturday, May 4, recognizing many student-athletes with individual awards and also giving special thanks to senior Katie Briglia. Many family members were on hand for the banquet and dinner, held at Temple's Edberg-Olson Hall.
Briglia, the only senior on the 2012-13 team, was named one of the team's Defensive Most Valuable Players along with freshman Taylor Shronk. She also was honored as the Anne Volp Field Hockey Scholar, awarded to the team member that best exemplifies the qualities displayed by Anne during her long career, including dedication, sportsmanship, and team leadership.
The Most Improved Player Award went to freshman Alyssa Hughes, while junior Mandi Shearer earned the Sportsmanship Award. Freshman Sarah Deck received the team's Hustler Award.
Sophomore Amber Youtz, the 2012 Atlantic 10 Offensive Player of the Year, was named the team's Most Valuable Offensive Player. Youtz's grandfather, Pap Youtz, was honored with the 4th Annual Randy Lokey Memorial Award, presented annually to a deserving TUFH fan or parent who has demonstrated faithful support and positive enthusiasm for the Temple University Field Hockey team.
The awards banquet caps a year which was a successful one for the Owls on the field and even more impressive in the classroom. The team's cumulative grade-point-average of 3.41 is the fifth-highest among all Division I field hockey teams.
After leading the team all season long, both Briglia and Youtz were named to the 2012 Longstreth/NFHCA All-American Mid-Atlantic Region Second Team. Youtz finished her sophomore season with 22 goals and 10 assists for 54 total points, raking fifth all-time in a single season at Temple, while her goal total ranks sixth all-time in single-season goals. With 11 assists in her senior season, Briglia led the team and narrowly missed breaking onto the all-time single season list. She also scored seven goals including two game-winners.
