Field Hockey Players Reflect on Their Under-21 Junior National Championship Experience

PHILADELPHIA - Three Temple field hockey players recently had the opportunity to participate in the United States Field Hockey Association's Under-21 Junior National Championships in Norfolk, Va. Alyssa Delp, Nicole Kroener and Amber Youtz were each invited to the championship based on their play throughout the High Performance season.
The event was held from June 20-25 at the Powhatan Sports Complex on the campus of Old Dominion University. Kroener's Metro team placed third, while Delp and Youtz's West team finished fourth.
"Overall, the tournament was a great experience," said Delp. "I was competing with and against the best U21 collegiate field hockey players in the whole country. It was really neat to observe the other players' techniques and try to incorporate what I learned from them into my own play. I definitely believe I became a better player from this experience, and have gained a new sense of confidence within my own field hockey play that I can bring back to Temple this upcoming season.
"I also learned a lot from my tournament coaches, Penn State head coach Charlene Morett, and Brown University head coach Jill Reeve," said Delp. "They both had so many helpful tips and words of encouragement throughout the games."
Youtz also felt the experience was extremely valuable, and was equally impressed by the coaches. "The tournament was a great learning experience along with a chance to try to showcase our skills," she said. "I personally saw this tournament as an opportunity to play with the top U21 athletes and receive training from different talented coaches. After this experience I definitely feel as though I have learned a lot to bring back to Temple field hockey so that we can keep improving as a team this upcoming fall."
