PHILADELPHIA – After serving for two years as a graduate assistant coach for Temple field hockey, Kelly Driscoll has been hired full-time as the assistant coach for the Owls under ninth-year head coach Amanda Janney. Driscoll replaces Charise Young, a 2010 Temple alum, who is moving on to pursue a career in teaching.
“Kelly has done a wonderful job over the last two years as our graduate assistant coach,” said Janney, “and I am so pleased to have the opportunity to promote her to our full-time first assistant. She is currently playing with the indoor national team and she sets a great example for our players with her love of the game and her desire to continue playing at the highest level.”
Driscoll, a goalkeeper, was part of the USA National Development team in 2011, and will be bringing her USA National outdoor team training experience to the USA National Indoor team as it prepares for the 2014 Pan American Indoor Cup. She trained full-time with the National Development Team in July and August of 2010 at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Chula Vista, Calif., and returned to train with the team from January to June of 2011. The U.S. Indoor squad will represent the nation at the Pan American Indoor Cup, a qualifier for the FIH Indoor World Cup that will be held in Germany in 2015.
In the summer of 2013, Driscoll stayed active at all levels and had a great deal of success at two tournaments. She was a goalkeeper for the Mamba Team which won the inaugural Harrow Cup, a post-collegiate tournament that was hosted at Temple's own Geasey Field in early June. Just prior to that, Driscoll competed at the USFHA Women's National Championships in Norfolk, Va., where her Pennsylvania High Performance Team finished as runners-up.
“I am very excited to stay on the coaching staff here at Temple,” said Driscoll. “We have a great field hockey program and I'm very happy to continue to be a part of it as we move into the BIG EAST Conference this season.”
Driscoll's accomplishments off the field are notable, as she recently earned a second master's degree in liberal arts from Temple. Her first master's was in applied sociology from Old Dominion in 2011, and she also earned her bachelor's degree from ODU in criminal justice and sociology in 2009. Driscoll played for the Monarchs from 2006-09 and was a two-time All-CAA First Team selection as well as a two-time All-Region honoree.
Janney praised the dedication of Young over her last two years as a coach and the previous four as a starting midfielder for the program. “Charise really helped get our program moving in the right direction,” said Janney, “and dedicated herself to making our team better both during her time as a coach and a player. She is now moving on to pursue her career in teaching, and we know her students will enjoy her mentorship as much as our players did.”
