PHILADELPHIA - In late June, two incoming Temple field hockey freshmen had the honor of competing in the USA Field Hockey National Futures Championship. Shawna Chopko (U19 Stockholm Team) and Taylor Janney (U19 London Team) both played in the event, held June 20-26 in Virginia Beach, Va.
The National Futures Championship, presented by Harrow Sports, is the premier championship event for USA Field Hockey's Futures Program and is a highly attended event by college recruiters and USA Field Hockey high performance staff. The top 12 percent of athletes in the Futures program had the opportunity to compete at the National Futures Championship, an annual event.
Chopko, a 5-2 defender/midfielder, is coming to Temple from Newark, Del., where she played for Newark High School and the North Bay Crush club team. She was a three-time all-conference selection, four-year starter and two-year team captain at Newark.
Janney, a 5-4 defender/midfielder, helped lead her Cherry Hill High School team to the second round of the state tournament as a senior. She earned second team all-conference honors at Cherry Hill, and also played for the South Jersey Edge club team.
