14th-Ranked Temple Field Hockey Edges Longwood in Double Overtime, 3-2

9.22.13 | Field Hockey

PHILADELPHIA - Twenty-two seconds into the second overtime period, 14th-ranked Temple field hockey's Alyssa Delp scored the game-winning goal to give the Owls (6-2) a 3-2 victory over visiting Longwood (3-5) on Sunday afternoon. Temple dominated offensively for most of the game, but Lancer goalkeeper Kaye Goulding was impressive with 10 saves.

"It was a relief," said Temple head coach Amanda Janney. "We played a good game today. We really passed the ball well. We made a couple mistakes down the middle but for the most part it was a good game for us. Longwood is a tough team and they have a very aggressive goalie who made it difficult to score.

"That's the kind of game we want. We want to have to work hard every minute and if it takes us to overtime, so be it."

The Owls struck first in the 18th minute when Delp scored her first of two goals in the game. She received a perfect pass from the right side by Mandi Shearer, and had a clean look at the cage around the left side of Goulding.

It would be Temple's only goal of the first half, and the 1-0 lead was short-lived.

Longwood's Stacey de Grandhomme redirected a pass from teammate Vanessa Tapper into goal just a minute and 10 seconds after the Owls' goal. Four minutes later, Nicole Deckard, sister of Temple graduate assistant coach Danica Deckard, scored on a direct penalty corner to give Longwood a 2-1 lead.

The Owls had two good shots on goal in the final four minutes of the first half, but both were saved by Goulding.

Eight minutes into the second half, Temple earned a penalty stroke and Nicole Kroener converted on that opportunity to tie the game at 2-2. It would be the only goal of the second half, despite a number of chances for the Owls, who had five penalty corners in the half compared to one for Longwood.

Temple goalkeeper Lizzy Millen, who had faced very few shots in the second half, was given more of a challenge in the first overtime period. She made three saves, including two on back-to-back shots by de Grandhomme on a corner.

At the other end, Goulding continued to shut down the Owls, who were scoreless in the first OT despite two corners.

The second overtime had barely gotten underway when Temple took the ball down field. After an initial shot by Shearer, Delp collected the rebound and finally got one past Goulding.

"The first overtime was a little frustrating because they were on me really tight," said Delp. "So to end it so soon (in the second overtime) was just so relieving."

The Owls will be back in action for their BIG EAST home opener on Friday, Sept. 27 against Rutgers at 3:00 p.m.
