Women's Tennis Gets Play Underway at Saint Joseph's Invitational

PHILADELPHIA – Three Temple women's tennis doubles teams were in action on Friday at the Saint Joseph's Invitational, while one singles player got play underway. The duos of Alicia Doms and Anais Nussaume, Rebecca Breland and Yana Mavrina, and Jordan Batey and Carly Bohman each played two matches in doubles play. Nussaume also got her quest for a singles title started.
Doms and Nussaume started things strongly, defeating Shivani Patel and Brittini Jentz of Saint Francis (Pa.), 8-1, in the opening round of flight one. The pair fell, 8-5, to Fairfield's Carolina Koladzyn and Monica Yajima in the second round.
Mavrina and Batey took on another duo from Fairfield in the first flight, dropping an 8-2 decision to Allison Radde and Sharissa Ryan in the opening round. The tandem moved into consolation play and fell in heartbreaking fashion to the team of Rafaela Panizza and Alex Sachs from SFU, 8-7(4).
Batey and Bohman were stellar on Friday, winning two matches without dropping a game in the second doubles flight. The pair defeated Loyola's Alexandra Billups and Meredith Dwyer, 8-0, in the opening round before blanking Karen McKeough and Victoria Pirrello of Fairfield to move into Saturday play. They will take on Lucy Jasso and Danielle Gryckiewicz of Saint Francis for a shot at the title match.
Nussaume was the lone Owl in action in singles play, picking up a straight-set win over Jasso, 6-1, 6-0, in the opening round of the second flight. She will now face Marcela Rosales of Drexel at 8:30 a.m. on Saturday. Also getting singles play underway at the second flight at 8:30 tomorrow morning is Breland with a match against Radde.
Both Doms and Mavrina open singles action with 10 a.m. matches at flight one. Doms squares off against Megan Hahn of Loyola, while Mavrina takes on Fairfield's Yajima. Batey (third flight) and Bohman (fourth flight) get started at 11:30. Batey goes up against Fairfield's Kaila Nelson and Bohman takes on Michele Vona of Saint Joseph's.
