NORRISTOWN, Pa. - After a full weekend of competition, Temple field hockey made the most of the Labor Day holiday by taking a trip out to the Elmwood Park Zoo. The zoo is home to Stella the Owl, Temple's new live mascot, who greeted the team and spent some time on the arm of head coach Amanda Janney.

Stella is expected to grace the sidelines at Temple's home football games, and has already made a couple of other appearances at events. Stella is a great horned owl, and is 3 1/2 years old.

The team also visited with the zoo's giraffes, which included many humorous moments as the players fed the animals lettuce with their teeth.

Temple field hockey alum Cherifa (Nouri) Howarth ('98) is the President of the Elmwood Park Zoo Board of Directors. Howarth has been a generous supporter of the field hockey program and of Temple Athletics, and in 2010, she and her husband, Greg, donated a brand-new state-of-the-art wireless scoreboard to Geasey Field.

"We are very grateful to Elmwood Park Zoo and to Cherifa Nouri Howarth for their hospitality," said Janney. "It is a gorgeous facility with such a family-friendly atmosphere, and I know our players really enjoyed meeting Stella, feeding the giraffes, and seeing all the other animals. Our TUFH players are outstanding representatives of Temple and our Athletics Department. We are off to an excellent start to our season and I was happy we could spend a fun day together off campus promoting Temple Athletics and our field hockey program."

Thanks to Shaun Rogers of the Elmwood Park Zoo for photos of the event. For more information about the zoo, visit the website at: http://www.elmwoodparkzoo.org/
