Temple Field Hockey Remains Nationally Ranked for a Sixth Week in a Row
10.14.14 | Field Hockey
PHILADELPHIAÂ - With a 10-4 record and wins in five of its last six games, the Temple field hockey team finds itself nationally ranked for a sixth week in a row in the Penn Monto/NFHCA Division I National Coaches Poll. This week, the Owls come in at #16, down one spot despite winning both of their games over the weekend.
The NCAA released its updated field hockey RPI on Tuesday, and Temple ranks #10 on that list. The Owls have not fallen below #13 in the RPI, and have been as high as #7.
The Owls were not ranked in the preseason poll, but they earned the #16 spot in the first poll of the regular season and have not been ranked any lower since that time. Temple has been ranked as high as 13th this season, and was ranked as high as 11th in 2013.
Temple is 2-0 in the BIG EAST Conference, topping the league standings along with #6 UConn, the defending BIG EAST and NCAA Champion. Last weekend the Owls defeated Villanova 6-3, and followed it up with a 5-1 win vs. La Salle.
The reigning BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Week for a second time this season is senior Amber Youtz, who scored seven of Temple's 11 goals for the weekend. Youtz now ranks third in NCAA Division I in goals per game (1.29) and fourth in points per game (2.79) while leading the BIG EAST in both categories.
With 60 career goals and 142 career points, Youtz ranks fourth all-time at Temple on both career lists. She needs eight more goals and 22 more points to tie for third. Her 18 goals this season already tie for 10th all-time in a single season with at least five games remaining.
Senior goalkeeper Lizzy Millen, already a three-time BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week this season, ranks third among all goalkeepers in the nation with a saves percentage of .806. She leads the conference in that category while ranking second in saves per game at 5.64.
Sophomore Paige Gross leads the Owls with 10 assists, and her 0.71 assists per game average is good enough for second in the BIG EAST and 19th in the nation.
Temple will face one of two other ranked teams in the BIG EAST this week, as the Owls travel to #19 Old Dominion on Friday.Â
