NEW YORK - After a 2-0 week and a pair of 4-0 shutout wins, #16 Temple field hockey's Taylor Shronk and Amber Youtz have swept the BIG EAST Weekly Awards. Shronk, a leader in the backfield for the Owls was named the BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week while Youtz, a forward, earned BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Week honors for a a third time this season.
This week marks the second time Temple has swept the BIG EAST awards this season, after Youtz and goalkeeper Lizzy Millen did so on Sept. 29.
Youtz had a hand in all eight of Temple's goals in the two wins, scoring four and assisting on the other four. She notched her fourth hat trick of the season with three goals in a 4-0 BIG EAST win for the Owls at Georgetown on Oct. 24, and recorded an assist on the final goal of the game.
Two days later, Youtz scored Temple's first goal before going on to assist all three second-half goals in a 4-0 home win for the Owls against Lafayette. Youtz has also been named the Under Armour OwlSports.com Athlete of the Week for her efforts, getting that honor for a second time this season.
For the season, Youtz has a league-high 57 points, 24 more than the No. 2 name on the list, and a BIG EAST-best 25 goals, 11 more than the second-ranked goal scorer in the conference. She leads all players in NCAA Division I with 1.39 goals per game.
Shronk anchored a defensive unit that limited Temple's two opponents to nine total shots in a pair of shutouts. Georgetown took just two shots against the Owls, with neither of those being on goal. Shronk made two defensive saves on five shots on goal by Lafayette in Temple's second win on Sunday.
She is the first non-goalkeeper to earn BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week honors this season, joining three-time honoree Millen as Temple's defensive award winners in 2014.
The Owls have now won three in a row to stand at 13-5 overall. They have just one regular season game remaining, and will face #5 UConn at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 1 for Senior Day. Temple has clinched a berth in the BIG EAST Tournament (Nov. 7 and 9 at Providence College) and will be no lower than the #3 seed.
