10.9.14 | Field Hockey
PHILADELPHIA - Two city rivals are on tap in two home games for #15 Temple field hockey this weekend. The Owls (8-4, 1-0) will host Villanova (3-8, 0-1) in a BIG EAST contest at 3:00 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 10, and will then host La Salle (6-4) at noon on Sunday, Oct. 12. Temple will dedicate Friday's game to Play 4 The Cure, and will honor alumni at Sunday's game.
In dedicating Friday's game to Play 4 The Cure, the Owls will be honoring all those who have both survived and lost the fight against breast cancer. More information about Play 4 The Cure is below. On Sunday, Temple will celebrate Alumni Day as part of Homecoming Weekend, and will also be celebrating this season being the 100th year of Temple field hockey.
Play 4 The Cure
Play4The Cure was founded in 2006 by Tina Reinprecht, coach of the Mystx Field Hockey Club in Feasterville, Pa., and a current board member of USA Field Hockey. Play4theCure began as an annual indoor field hockey tournament to raise money for the fight against breast cancer, but has since expanded to include many recreational sports programs, as well as middle school, high school and collegiate teams.
Now, together with National Foundation for Cancer Research, Play4theCure has the opportunity to save lives by emphasizing early detection and prevention, while playing a key role in finding cures for ALL types of cancer. Temple field hockey is proud each season to support the NFCR and Play4TheCure.
100 Years of Temple Field Hockey
Although records exist only since the late 1940's, an old team photo was found that indicated 1914 as the inaugural season of Temple field hockey. On Alumni Day (Oct. 12 vs. La Salle), Temple will honor its alums while also celebrating the 100th season of the program.
Millen Having a Standout Season in Goal
Temple senior goalkeeper Lizzy Millen has played a major role in the Owls' success. Millen currently ranks fifth among all goalkeepers in NCAA Division I with a saves percentage of .813. Millen ranks 17th nationally in saves per game (6.17) and 18th in goals against average (1.53). She leads the BIG EAST in both saves percentage and saves per game. Millen has been named the BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week three times in just the first six weeks of the season.
Central Dauphin Duo
Senior Amber Youtz and sophomore Katie Foran are both products of Central Dauphin High School, where they played together for two seasons. The pair have teamed up for three goals this season, and are also the top two in points for the Owls. Youtz leads the team with 25, while Foran has 11 in her sophomore season.
Owls' Gross Assets
Sophomore Paige Gross currently leads the team and ranks 30th in the nation with seven assists (0.58 per game). Her most recent two assists have come as the stick stop on direct penalty corners, and she has a number of other assists on corner plays as well.
Youtz Moving Up the Ranks
Senior Amber Youtz has already made her mark at Temple in a big way, and she is continuing to move up the career record lists in her final season. With 11 goals so far this season, Youtz has now scored 53 goals as an Owl to rank fourth all-time in the record books. She will need 15 more to tie for third.
Youtz has recorded 128 career points to rank fourth in that category as well. She will likely move into the top 10 for assists before long. She currently has 22 assists in her career, needing just one more to break into a tie for 10th place.
