PHILADELPHIA - Behind 15 points from junior Quenton DeCosey and a double-double from junior Jaylen Bond, Temple men's basketball earned a 70-56 win over visiting LIU Brooklyn on Sunday afternoon at the Liacouras Center. The Owls improved to 4-2 overall and remain undefeated at home with a 4-0 record this season.
Temple had to come from behind after trailing the Blackbirds (0-4) by as many as nine in the first half, and by seven at the break. The Owls scored 43 points in the second half, taking control in the final 10 minutes and using an 18-3 run to pull ahead for good. DeCosey fueled the second-half run, scoring 14 of his game-high 15 points in the latter half.
Bond grabbed a career-high 13 rebounds in addition to scoring 11 points. Senior Will Cummings came just one point shy of a double-double, recording a career-high 10 boards and scoring nine points while also dishing four assists.
The Owls got off to a rough start, hitting just five of their 16 attempts from the field. The Blackbirds built a nine-point, 16-7 lead after six and a half minutes. Temple still trailed by six with nine minutes left in the half, but the Owls used a 9-0 run over a two-minute span, hitting 5-of-6 from the field, to take their first lead of 25-22 at 7:20.
Bond scored a dunk during the run off a perfect pass from redshirt sophomore Daniel Dingle, and Cummings capped the run with the Owls' first three-pointer.
That explosive spurt did not last, as Temple would go on to hit zero shots from the field in the final seven minutes of the half. LIU Brooklyn closed out with a 12-2 run to lead 34-27 at the break, thanks to seven points from Martin in the final five minutes.
Temple finished the half shooting just 33.3 percent compared to 42 percent for the Blackbirds. The Owls took 15 shots from long range, but Cummings' trey was the one they were able to convert.
The teams traded buckets over the first five minutes of the second half, and Temple still trailed at the 15-minute mark, 45-40, before going on to dominate for the remainder of the game.
DeCosey got the crowd going with back-to-back three-pointers for the Owls' first lead of the half, and those buckets started what became an 18-3 run that put them ahead 58-48 with 7:50 left.
LIU Brooklyn was able to cut the margin to no fewer than eight down the stretch, and the Owls took their largest lead of 16 with just over a minute remaining.
Sophomore Josh Brown was Temple's third player to hit double figures in scoring for the contest, finishing with 11. After getting out-rebounded 23-20 in the first half, the Owls dominated on the glass in the second half, 30-17, to end the game with a 50-40 edge in rebounds. On the offensive glass, Temple's 15 boards led to a 21-6 edge in second-chance points.
Temple will return to action on Wednesday, Dec. 3 for a Big 5 contest at Saint Joseph's at 6:30 p.m. (CBS Sports Network/1210 AM WPHT).
