Three Boats Finish First for Men's Crew at Frostbite Regatta

WEST WINDSOR, N.J. - Temple men's crew had three boats record top finishes at the 2014 Frostbite Regatta held on Lake Mercer on Saturday. The Owls saw all of their entries rank in the top three of their flights to wrap up a successful showing on the 2000-meter course.
Two of Temple's entries recorded victories in the top flights of their events -- the freshman four and the college four. The Owls also won the third flight of the college four race. In the freshman four event, Temple recorded a time of 7:12.68, passing La Salle, Philadelphia, and TCNJ. In the top flight of the college four event, Temple's "A" team bested six boats with a time of 6:53.43, ahead of Colgate, Loyola, Philadelphia, Lafayette, and TCNJ. Also competing in the college four event, Temple's "B" boat won their flight, recording a time of 7:05.50 to top NY Maritime, Loyola, and Stony Brook.
Temple's freshman four included Samuel Vecchione (coxswain), Andrew Grochowski (stroke), Austin Theuret (three seat), Jeffrey Brenner (two seat), and Joseph Fairweather (bow), while the varsity four "A" boat was made up of Truman Levine (coxswain), Collin McKinney (stroke), Charles Anderson (three seat), Tom Robbins (two seat), and Ryan Dartnell (bow). The varsity four "B" boat consisted of Julia Wolanski (coxswain), Conor Murphy (stroke), Evan Hammond (three seat), Brian Reifsnyder (two seat), and Gary Wielgus (bow).Â
Two other Temple boats also had success in the top flights. The Owl varsity eight boat ranked second overall, while the second varsity "A" boat finished third. The varsity eight clocked in at 6:02.29), less than four seconds off of Drexel (5:58.97), but ahead of Ithaca, Colgate, and Delaware. In the second varsity race, Temple (6:28.67) was just off the pace of of Drexel (6:20.26) and Delaware (6:24.55), and finished ahead of Ithaca, Washington College, and La Salle. The varsity eight was made up of Truman Levine (coxswain), Conor Murphy (stroke), Charles Anderson (seven seat), Bryan Berry (six seat), Evan Hammond (five seat), Tom Robbins (four seat), Gary Wielgus (three seat), Collin McKinney (two seat), and Ryan Dartnell (bow). The second varsity entry consisted of Julia Wolanski (coxswain), Vittorio DiPentino (stroke), Dylan McCreavy (seven seat), Matthew Minns (six seat), Nikolas Dula (five seat), Nicholas Olimpo (four seat), John Higgins (three seat), Tyler Baldo (two seat), and Guillermo Vazquez (bow).

The 2V "B" boat was made up of Kati Funck (coxswain), Hunter Devine (stroke), Stephen Lindeman (seven seat), Michael Pellegrini (six seat), David Buckley (five seat), Brian Reifsnyder (four seat), Dan Sipzner (three seat), Nick Matousch (two seat), and Robert Byrne (bow), while the freshman eight entry consisted of Samuel Vecchione (coxswain), Jeffrey Brenner (stroke), Austin Theuret (seven seat), Andrew Grochowski (six seat), Joseph Fairweather (five seat), Andrew Collins (seat 4), Reinier Smit (three seat), James Case (two seat), and Tyler Martin (bow).Â
Wrapping up the Temple entries at the event, the Temple freshman four "B" boat of Nicholas Olimpo (coxswain), Andrew Collins (stroke), Reinier Smit (three seat), James Case (two seat), and Tyler Martin (bow) ranked third in the third flight.
Temple men's crew will have little rest as the Owls have four boats entered into Sunday's Braxton Memorial Regatta, also held on Lake Mercer.Â
