Youtz Tabbed ECAC Field Hockey Offensive Player of the Year; Millen Also Honored

DANBURY, Conn. – The Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) announced its 2014 Division I Field Hockey All-Star teams on Thursday, and Temple's Amber Youtz was tabbed Offensive Player of the Year. Youtz, a senior forward, is already a First Team All-American and was named the BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Year as well. Roisin Upton of UConn earned Defensive Player of the Year honors. University of Virginia freshman Tara Vittese was named Rookie of the Year and University at Albany Head Coach Phil Sykes was tabbed Coach of the Year. Representatives at ECAC Division I member institutions completed the voting.
Temple senior goalkeeper Lizzy Millen was also honored by the ECAC, as she was named to the All-Star Second Team. Millen was a Longstreth/NFHCA All-Region First Team selection as well as a BIG EAST First Team honoree.
Youtz, a Longstreth/National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) First Team All-American and BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Year, finished second in the nation in both goals and points per game this season. After scoring 27 goals and totaling 62 points in 2014, Youtz closed out her career with 69 goals and 165 career points. In 2014, she was the active NCAA Division I career leader in both goals and points. She also was a three-time BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Week and two-time ECAC Division I Field Hockey Offensive Player of the Week in 2014.
Upton was a vital part to the Huskies' 2014 NCAA Field Hockey National Championship squad. The BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Year registered six goals and 12 assists for 24 points through 22 games to lead the Huskies to a perfect 5-0 record in conference and a BIG EAST Tournament title. She was also recognized as the NFHCA Mideast Region Player of the Year and BIG EAST Tournament Most Outstanding Player.
Atlantic Coast Conference Freshman of the Year, Vittese ranked fourth in the country with 2.55 points per game, scoring 17 goals and dishing out 17 assists. The midfielder had an incredible rookie campaign, closing out the regular season leading the ACC in points (51), points per game (2.68), goals (17), shots (80) and shots per game (4.21) as well as being tied for first in assists (17). Vittese was also named to the Longstreth/NFHCA Division I All-American First Team and a two-time Corvias ECAC Division I Field Hockey Offensive Player of the Week.
Albany Head Coach, Phil Sykes, guided the Great Danes to a program record 20 wins, as well as an all-time best 14-game win streak. In 2014, Sykes' squad defeated three top-10 nationally ranked opponents, including the program's first-ever win over a top-10 opponent on September 14th at eighth-ranked Stanford University. In his 11th season, the program finished ranked top-10 nationally in goals per game (6th), assists per game (5th), save percentage (4th) and shutouts per game (2nd). Sykes was named America East Coach of the Year and NFHCA Regional Coach of the Year after picking up the America East Tournament title and making an appearance in the NCAA Division I Field Hockey Semifinals.
