MEMPHIS - An impressive effort by Temple men's basketball at #22/24 Memphis ended in an overtime thriller with the Tigers (21-6, 10-4) barely edging the Owls, 82-79. Temple (7-19, 2-12) rebounded from a 10-point second-half deficit to lead by as many as four, but was undone by a few misses late in the overtime period. The crowd of 18,172 was the largest the Owls have played in front of this season.
For the first time since February 20, 2008, three Temple players scored 20 or more points. Will Cummings led the way with 24, Quenton DeCosey finished with 23 after scoring just four in the first half, and Dalton Pepper put up 20 points including four three-pointers.
The game was Temple's fourth of five contests in a row against teams ranked in the Top 25, and a win would have been the Owls' second victory in a week against a ranked opponent after taking down #23 SMU on Feb. 16.
Five players reached double figures for the Tigers, led by Shaq Goodwin with 20 points on 10-of-15 shooting from the field.
The final nine minutes of regulation saw neither team lead by more than one possession, and three points was also the largest lead of overtime. The Owls had seven seconds to hit one from long range on their final possession, but a long try by DeCosey rebounded off the backboard in the final seconds.
It was a Cummings and Pepper show the entire first half for the Owls, and it was not until 7:49 remained that DeCosey hit a free throw and became the third Temple player to score in the game.
Cummings and Pepper combined to hit 10-of-20 from the field, but a DeCosey trey with 52 seconds remaining was the only field goal in the half by a different player, as the rest of the team combined to go 1-for-10.
The Owls withstood one big run by Memphis in the half, but struggled a bit in the final minutes.
Pepper put up seven points in just over four minutes to start the game, helping Temple jump out to a 9-6 lead. Memphis responded with seven straight points that turned into a 13-3 run, giving the Tigers a 22-14 lead at the midway point.
With a three-pointer at 9:34, Cummings ended the Memphis run and scored five straight to get the Owls within three. They stayed within one or two possessions until the final three minutes of the half when the Tigers pulled ahead by as many as 11, but Temple got it to eight by the break, 40-32.
DeCosey got going early in the second half, scoring eight points in the opening four minutes. He helped keep Temple in it as the Tigers extended their lead to 10 in the first minute and later hit four straight from the field to keep the lead at nine.
The second nine-point lead would be the largest the rest of the way for Memphis, as the Owls came back yet again, using an 11-0 run to take a four-point lead with 9:46 left.
Neither team led by more than one possession for more than nine minutes to end regulation in a neck-and-neck game. The Owls briefly led by a point in the second minute of overtime on Pepper's fourth trey of the game, but they would hit just 1-for-7 the rest of the way.Â
Devontae Watson pulled down nine rebounds to lead the Owls, and tied Cummings for game-high honors with three steals. Â
