PHILADELPHIA – Nancy Kelly, already a member of the Temple Athletics Hall of Fame, was recently inducted into the Cerritos College Hall of Fame as part of the Class of 2014. Kelly was one of eight honored at the March 13, 2014 ceremony.

Shelley Hall (Distinguished Female Athlete – Basketball), Antonio McKee (Distinguished Male Athlete – Wrestling), Eric Draper (Distinguished Alumnus), Carmen Garcia (Distinguished Classified), John Boyle (Distinguished Faculty), Southern California Edison (Distinguished Corporate Partner) and Nello Di Corpo (Distinguished President's Award of Excellence) were also honored by the Norwalk, Calif., school.

Kelly, who grew up in Philadelphia, was inducted as a Distinguished Coach at Cerritos College. She coached the Falcons' softball squad from 1976 through 1997, amassing 502 career wins.

Kelly starred at Temple in basketball, field hockey, softball and tennis from 1954-1957. She averaged 28.7 points per game in basketball and once had 39 points in a victory over Drexel. An outstanding pitcher on the diamond, she led TU's softball team to an unbeaten season in 1956. In two varsity seasons, she won 10-straight games, pitched two no-hitters and three one-hitters. In field hockey, Kelly made the All College I team and led the Cherry & White to an 8-1 record, while on the tennis court, she played on Temple's No. 1 doubles team.

While at TU, she received the highest athletic award bestowed on a Temple female athlete, a white blazer from the Women's Athletic Association.

Kelly graduated from Temple in 1958 with a Bachelor of Science degree before receiving a Masters of Education degree in 1966. In 1973, Kelly completed her preparation curriculum in Theology and was ordained a Christian Minister of the Gospel.

In 1975, she accepted a full-time position as a teacher and coach at Cerritos College, where she remained until her retirement in 2002.

The softball field, which bears her name, Nancy Kelly Field, is one of only two athletic fields at the college to be named after its first coach. In recognition of her dedication to the college and the athletic program, the college named the field in Kelly's honor on February 22, 2001 in a special ceremony. During her 23 years as the head coach, Kelly led the Falcons to 15 Southern California Regional Playoff appearances, five South Coast Conference Championships, in addition to their state title when they posted a 33-2 record. The year before, she led the team to a 27-3 mark and Cerritos was the Southwest AIAW runner-up as well as the National AIAW runner-up.

In addition to the field being named after her, Kelly has helped establish the Nancy Kelly Academic Scholarship, which is awarded to a student-athlete who attends Cerritos College for two years, plays softball for two years and qualifies to transfer under the National Collegiate Athletic Association rules.

Kelly was inducted into Temple's Hall of Fame with the Class of 1987.
