Baseball Defeats Memphis 3-1 For First Conference Win

3.21.14 | Baseball

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Temple baseball (6-9, 1-0) defeated Memphis (14-7, 0-1) 3-1 for its first ever American Athletic Conference Win on Friday night at FedEx Park.

Both teams went scoreless in the first three innings before Temple scored the first run in the top of the fourth inning.  Reyn Sugai singled up the middle to lead off the inning.  Daniel Dragos then singled to shortstop to move Sugai to second.  Derek Peterson reached on base on a fielder's choice that got Dragos out at second.  Robert Amaro hit a sacrifice fly deep enough to centerfield to score Sugai.

The Owls added another run in the eighth inning for a two run lead.  Andrew Nist singled to shortstop to start the inning.  Texas Williams came in for Nist as a pinch runner and advanced to second on a wild pitch.  D'Agostino walked to put runners on first and second.  Jimmy Kerrigan laid a bunt down that got Williams out at third.  With two outs, Temple used a fielding error at second that allowed D'Agostino to score.

Starting pitcher Matt Hockenberry held Memphis scoreless until two outs in the eighth inning when Memphis scored off a single through the right side.  Tim McCarthy came in for Hockenberry to get the final out of the inning with a fly ball to center field.

Hockenberry allowed only six hits and two walks along with three strikeouts for another quality start by the senior.  Hockenberry now has a 3-0 record for Temple as the No.1 starter.

Temple added an insurance run in the ninth.  Derek Peterson singled up the middle and advanced to second with a grounder by Amaro.  Peterson went to third when D'Acunti grounded out to the pitcher.  Williams knocked in Peterson with a single to third base.

Zach Batchelor came in to pitch the ninth, and he retired the side with only nine pitches.  Batchelor has now pitched seven games this season without allowing any earned runs.

Temple continues the weekend series against Memphis tomorrow at 3:00 p.m.
