Baseball Tops Memphis 4-3 to Win Series

3.23.14 | Baseball

MEMPHIS – Temple baseball (7-10, 2-1) defeated Memphis (15-8, 1-2) 4-3 to win its first conference series of the 2014 season.
Temple jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning.  With one out Daniel Dragos walked.  Derek Peterson reached on a fielding error by the third baseman that moved Dragos to second.  Robert Amaro knocked in both runners with a double down the left field line.

The Owls added another run in the third inning to extend their lead to three.  With two outs Amaro reached second on a fielding error by the left fielder.  Amaro then scored off a Michael D'Acunti single to right field.

Memphis got on the board with a run scored off a wild pitch by starter Ryan Keuhn.  Keuhn went four and two-thirds innings for the Owls, giving up only three hits, one hit, and three walks while striking out two.

Zach White and Time McCarthy combined for three innings of scoreless relief.  White gave up zero hits and walks with one strikeout in his one and one-third innings of relief.

Temple added an extra run in the eighth that proved to be the game-winning run.  Amaro was hit by a pitch and went to second off a sacrifice bunt by D'Acunti.  Frank D'Agostino doubled down the left field line to knock in Amaro.

Zach Batchelor recorded the last four outs for Temple.  Batchelor came in the eighth inning with two outs and runners on second and third.  He ended the inning with a grounder to second baseman Reyn Sugai.  He gave up two runs in the ninth off a single to left center and a fielder's choice that ended his seven-game scoreless streak to start the season, but still recorded the save with a strike out that ended the game.  This was Batchelor's second save of the weekend, and third of the season.

Keuhn picked up his first win in his first start as well.  Amaro lead the Owls at the plate with one hit in three at-bats and two RBI, giving him a team-leading 17 RBI this season.

Temple will host Delaware next Tuesday in the first round of the Liberty Bell Classic at 3:00 p.m.
