Baseball to Host Delaware Tomorrow in Liberty Bell Classic Quarterfinal

PHILADELPHIA – Temple baseball will play Delaware tomorrow at 3:00 p.m. at Skip Wilson Field in Ambler Sports Complex.  The opening game of the Liberty Bell Classic for both teams was originally scheduled for last Tuesday, but was cancelled due to winter weather creating unplayable conditions.  The Owls come into the weekend with a 7-13, 2-4 record.  This marks the first home game of the season for the Owls, as eight home games have been postponed, cancelled or moved to a different location.  Four players have started every game for the Owls this season with seniors leading the way.  Senior Derek Peterson is hitting a team-leading .303, with 14 of his 23 hits going for doubles for a slugging percentage of .513.  Senior Rob Amaro, who leads the team with 20 RBI, is hitting .271 and has a slugging percentage of .443.  Sophmore Jimmy Kerrigan, the only underclassman to start all 20 games, has managed a .281 average and is tied for third on the team for hits (18) with senior Daniel Dragos.

A starter for the game has not been determined as of now.  Simon MathewsPhil Gianakos, and Zach White are the only Owls that have started at least one game and not start against UCF last weekend.  Mathews has started four games, going 0-4 with a 12.27 ERA.  Gianakos has started one game in five appearances with a 4.00 ERA with nine innings pitched.  White is 0-2 with a 7.94 ERA in six appearances and one start.

ABOUT DELAWARE…

Delaware enters the game with a 10-14, 0-2 record and have dropped six of its last seven games.  The Blue Hens have played 14 home games at Harford Community College in Bel Air, Md. while their field, Bob Hannah Stadium, is under renovation.  They have gone 1-4 in road games to start the season. 

Delaware has four players with batting averages above or at .300.  Norm Donkin has started all 24 games with a .367 average, team-leading nine doubles, and 15 RBI  Donkin also is eight for nine on stolen base attempts and has a .567 slugging percentage with three home runs and 10 walks.  Joe Giacchino is hitting .301 with six doubles, two triples and one home run.  EJ Stoltzfus is only other player to start all 24 games besides Donkin.  Stoltzfus has hit .287 on the season with three doubles, 14 runs and 10 RBI.

Kevin Milley is scheduled to start for the Blue Hens.  Milley is 0-1 with a 3.75 ERA, pitching 12 innings with six strikeouts, five walks and 16 hits allowed.  He has appeared in five total games with one start so far this season.

ALL-TIME SERIES WITH DELAWARE...

Temple is 50-54 against Delaware, with the Blue Hens defeating the Owls twice last season.
