Prezioso and Pitching Staff Lead Softball to Doubleheader Sweep at Lafayette

4.1.14 | Softball

EASTON, Pa. – Senior Sarah Prezioso had a record setting day, and Temple pitchers Kelsey Dominik and Amanda Gatt tossed two gems, as the Owls' softball squad swept Lafayette in a non-conference doubleheader on Tuesday, April 1. TU (9-14) defeated the Leopards (2-18) 4-0 in the opener, and 10-1 in the nightcap.

Prezioso's performance on Tuesday was no joke as the shortstop went a combined 6-for-9 with a double, homerun, four runs scored, three RBI and a stolen base. With her steal in game one, Prezioso broke the Temple record for steals, giving her 52 in her career and passing Katie Weigle's 51 swipes set in 2004. In addition, the captain collected her 200th career hit with a double in the fifth inning of the first game, becoming the first Temple player to ever surpass that plateau.

In the first game, Temple scored single runs in four different innings. In the second frame, Kaylyn Zierke ripped a double off the wall in leftfield and later scored on Julia Kastner's single. The Owls added another in the third. This time it was Annie Marcopolus who started the inning with a hard-hit double. Zierke plated her with a two-out single as Temple led 2-0.

Lafayette had opportunities to score, loading the bases with no outs in the second. Dominik got out of the jam, inducing a force out at the plate before fanning the next two batters to end the threat.

The Owls stretched their advantage to 3-0 in the fifth with Dominik's two-out double off the fence in left centerfield, plating Prezioso. The righty did the damage again in the seventh, pulling an off-speed offering over the wall in left for the 4-0 final.

Dominik (5-5) struck out nine Leopards on the afternoon, giving up just two hits in the second inning for the victory. Lafayette starter Lindsey Cherry (0-5) allowed four runs on 10 hits with a walk and four strikeouts.

In the nightcap, Temple scored six runs in the top of the fourth in an eventual 10-1 win. Marcopolus had the big blow of that inning with a three-run homer. Prezioso, who was 4-for-5 including a two-run double, and Kastner (RBI-doubled) each drove in runs.

Melissa Robinson's single up the middle in the bottom of the fifth ended a no-hit bid by Gatt. The Leopards pushed across their lone run of the day in the bottom of the seventh. Vergona connected for an RBI-double to score Kristen Berger.

Gatt (3-2) struck out four and walked two while giving up one run on a pair of hits in the win. Kristyn Marinelli (0-4) allowed 10 runs on 16 hits with six strikeouts and four walks.

The Cherry & White head to Penn for a single game against the cross-city rivals on Wednesday, April 2, beginning at 4 p.m.
