Baseball Falls at UConn 4-1

STORRS, Conn. – Temple baseball fell to UConn 4-1 in an American Athletic Conference game at J.O. Christian Field on Thursday afternoon. Temple drops to 10-19, 5-8 while UConn improves to 18-17, 5-4.
The Huskies scored the first run of the game in the first inning off a single through the left side of the infield. They scored another run off starter Matt Hockenberry in the third from a fielder's choice to third base.
Temple got on the board with a run in the sixth inning. Daniel Dragos led off the inning with a walk. Derek Peterson singled with a bunt to third base. Both base runners advanced one base when Michael D'Acunti laid down a sacrifice bunt to the third baseman. After Robert Amaro was intentionally walked, Andrew Nist drew a walk on four straight balls to allow Dragos to jog in home for the run.
UConn added two more runs in the seventh inning when they took advantage of two errors by Temple.
Hockenberry lasted six and one-thirds innings, allowing nine hits, four runs (two unearned) and three walks. He finished with six strikeouts.
Zach White pitched one and two-thirds scoreless innings of relief. White gave up one hit and zero walks while striking out one batter.
The Owls were unable to comeback as they were held hitless for the last three innings.
Peterson went two for three at the plate with a single and double, his 16th of the year.
Temple will face UConn in game two of the series tomorrow at 1:00 p.m. Patrick Vanderslice is the scheduled starter for Temple.
