Baseball Beat by Rutgers 5-4 in 14 Innings with Walk-Off Home Run

PISCATAWAY, N.J. – Temple baseball was defeated by Rutgers 5-4 in 14 innings on Friday evening by a walk-off home run by Brian O'Grady at Bainton Field. The Owls drop to 12-25, 7-9 while Rutgers improves to 21-22, 7-8.
Rutgers scored two runs in the third and one each in the fourth and fifth innings to get a 4-0 lead. The Owls were able to mount a comeback and tie it in the eighth.
The Owls rally started in the seventh inning with three runs. Reyn Sugai singled to left field to start the inning and went to second when David Hall drew a walk. After a sacrifice bunt by Daniel Dragos, Bobby Heitzman knocked in both base runners with a double down the right field line. Heitzman stole third base and scored on a Robert Amaro single to the shortstop.
With one out in the eighth, bases were loaded with Frank D'Agostino on third after Reyn Sugai and Hall were both hit by pitches. Daniel Dragos laid down a squeeze bunt that allowed D'Agostino to reach home safely.
Matt Hockenberry went six innings as the starting pitcher for Temple. Hockenberry allowed seven hits and four earned runs while striking out seven batters.
The Temple bullpen allowed only two hits in seven and one-third innings pitched. Phil Gianakos registered one out in the sixth inning, and Patrick Krall finished the rest of the inning and pitched the seventh as well. Tim McCarthy then pitched three scoreless innings. Zach White had registered seven outs with no hits before giving up the walk-off home run.
Temple out-hit Rutgers 12-9 but left 19 on base. Dragos, Heitzman, Peterson and Amaro each had two hits as Peterson hit his 20th double of the season.
Game two will take place at 1:00 p.m. tomorrow with Patrick Vanderslice scheduled to start.
