PHILADELPHIA - As they prepare to continue what has become a strong tradition of success, the Temple field hockey Owls have announced their team captains for the 2014 season. Seniors Nicole Kroener and Lizzy Millen, along with junior Rachel Steinman, have been voted by their teammates as co-captains for the year.
"One of the reasons for our success every year is our leadership on the team," said 10th-year head coach Amanda Janney. "This is a solid group that brings different strengths to their leadership. We're excited that Rachel got nominated by her teammates as a junior. With it being her fourth year overall, she brings a lot of experience to our backfield, and she also brings a lot of passion for the game. She loves to play and she's super competitive. Nicole and Lizzy are steady, mature players that have a lot of experience. We think they're both just outstanding role models and mentors for the underclassmen, and we know they'll be great leaders for us this year."
Kroener has proven to be a valuable weapon on penalty corners for Temple, and led the team last season with 10 assists while also scoring three goals. Steinman helps anchor a strong defensive unit that includes Millen, the team's starting goalkeeper for the past three seasons and an All-BIG EAST Second Team honoree last year.
"We rely a lot on our captains and give them a lot of responsibilities within the team, both on and off the field," said Janney. "A huge piece of our success both in the classroom and on the field is due to the good example that they present to their teammates."
The Owls will begin preseason in two weeks, on August 12. Temple begins the regular season by co-hosting the Conference Cup Tournament with Maryland at The Spooky Nook in Lancaster, Pa. The Nook is the training site of the USA National Team, and the tournament will also feature UMass and Northeastern. Temple will play Northeastern at 7:00 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 29, and will face UMass at 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 31. While the Owls will not play Maryland that weekend, they will travel to face the powerhouse Terrapins a couple of weeks later on Sept. 14.
