9.30.14 | Field Hockey
PHILADELPHIA - After a 2-0 week, Temple field hockey has jumped one spot to #14 in the Penn Monto/NFHCA Division I Top 20 Coaches Poll. In the latest NCAA RPI release, also announced today, Temple also moved up a spot, to #12.
Temple is now ranked for a fourth straight week after entering the poll in week one at #16, and the Owls have been ranked as high as #13. Temple is one of three BIG EAST teams in the poll, joined by #6 UConn and #18 Old Dominion.
The Owls (7-3) are coming off a 5-0 shutout win vs. Kent State this past Saturday and a 3-2 win against American on Sunday. Seniors Lizzy Millen and Amber Youtz swept the BIG EAST Conference weekly awards after their impressive performances in both games.
For Millen, who was named the BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week, it was her third such honor this season. She earned a pair of wins by stopping 13 shots in nearly 125 combined minutes against Kent State and American. Millen's .831 saves percentage for the season ranks sixth among all goalkeepers in NCAA Division I, while also leading the conference. She ranks 16th nationally in goals against average (1.33) and 24th in saves per game (5.90) while leading the BIG EAST in that category.
Youtz, the BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Week, recorded her fifth career hat trick against Kent State, and followed it up with a goal and an assist in the win vs. American for nine total points on the week. She has scored in three of Temple's last four games, and ranks seventh in NCAA Division I in goals per game (1.00). She also ranks 15th nationally in points per game with a BIG EAST-best 2.20 average. Youtz's goal against American put her at 52 career goals, which moved her into fourth place alone on the all-time list.
Two of the Owls' three losses this season are to teams currently ranked in the Top 4 (#2 Maryland and #4 Duke), and the third was a 1-0 overtime loss to Drexel.
Temple will play its first BIG EAST Conference game of the season on Friday when the Owls travel to Providence for a 5:00 p.m. contest. On Sunday, Temple returns home to face #9 Penn State at noon.
