Men's Basketball Has Win Streak Snapped by Tulsa, 63-56
1.10.15 | Men's Basketball
PHILADELPHIA - Suffering a long cold spell in the second half after taking a double-digit lead, Temple men's basketball had its six-game win streak snapped by Tulsa (10-5, 3-0) in a 63-56 loss on Saturday afternoon. It was also the Owls first home loss of the season in eight games.
Temple (12-5, 3-1) led by 11 just before the midway point of the second half, but went over eight minutes without a field goal while Tulsa used a 19-1 run to take the lead for good. The cold spell was preceded by a big blow for the Owls, as senior point guard Will Cummings left the game with a strained muscle in his lower left leg. His status going forward is day-to-day.
The efforts of junior forward Jaylen Bond were a bright spot for Temple, as he recorded his third consecutive double-double with a game-high 14 rebounds to go with 16 points. Junior Quenton DeCosey also scored in double figures for the Owls with 12 points. Although he struggled from the field, senior Jesse Morgan recorded a career-high six assists and tied his career high with four steals.
Tulsa junior Shaquille Harrison hit 10-of-12 free throws and finished with a game-high 24 points to lead the Golden Hurricane.
The baskets were not kind to either team in the first half, particularly to Tulsa as the Golden Hurricane shot just 16 percent from the field. The Owls fared a little better thanks in part to some late buckets, and finished with a percentage of 28.6.
Bond hit Temple's first shot from the field, a three-pointer, just over seven minutes into the game. That shot tied the game at 4-4, and was Temple's only make in its first 15 attempts. After Tulsa took a 6-4 lead, Mark Williams hit a trey at 9:48 that gave the Owls a lead they would not relinquish.
Tulsa made just two field goals in the final 11:44 of the first half as Temple's defense locked down. The Owls closed the half on a 7-2 run to take their largest lead of six at the break, 23-17.
With another 7-2 run to start the second half, Temple took its largest lead of 11, 30-19 at 17:51. Bond scored six of the Owls' next seven points, but Tulsa had an answer to every Temple bucket, keeping the margin between 8-10 points.
Bond's second trey of the game at 11:34 got the Owls back to an 11-point lead, but Temple went completely cold over the next eight minutes.
The Hurricane scored 19 of the next 20 points, taking a lead and then building on it. They led by as many as seven, 54-47 before Josh Brown ended the Owls' eight and a half minute streak without a field goal.
After Tulsa answered Brown's bucket, DeCosey hit a three-pointer that narrowed the margin to four, 56-52 with 2:14 remaining. Brown went 2-of-2 at the line with 26 seconds left to cut the deficit to three, but it was as close as Temple could get. The Hurricane made 4-of-6 at the line in the final 25 seconds while the Owls missed three shots from the field.
Temple will be back at home for its next game, a 7:00 p.m. contest against SMU on Wednesday, Jan. 14 (CBS SN/1210 AM WPHT).
