Men's Basketball Hosts SMU Wednesday

1.12.15 | Men's Basketball

PHILADELPHIA - Looking to bounce back from its first loss in nearly three weeks, the Temple men's basketball team hosts Hall of Fame coach Larry Brown and his SMU Mustangs Wednesday at the Liacouras Center.  Tip time is 7:00 p.m. for the nationally-televised (CBS Sports Network) showdown.

The Owls (12-5, 3-1 American) saw their six-game win streak come to an end Saturday with a 63-56 defeat to league frontrunner Tulsa. Temple led Tulsa by 11 points early in the second half when senior co-captain Will Cummings left the game due to a strained muscle in his lower left leg.  His status is day-to-day.

Cummings (13.6 ppg), who was the Owls' leading scorer entering Saturday's game, is one of a trio of TU guards averaging double figures. Junior Quenton DeCosey, the team's most consistent scorer, tops the Cherry and White with a 14.0 average while senior transfer Jesse Morgan, who scored a season-low two points against Tulsa, is tallying 12.3 points per game.

Junior forward Jaylen Bond has been a force inside for head coach Fran Dunphy's Owls. The 6-8 Texas transfer sits atop the conference with an 8.6 rebound average while scoring at an identical 8.6 clip.  Freshman forward Obi Enechionyia (4.0 ppg, 3.8 rpg) rounds out the starting five.

The Owls utilize a 10-man rotation this season with sophomore guard Josh Brown topping all reserves with a 7.2 scoring average.  Devontae Watson (2.0 ppg), Devin Coleman (4.0 ppg), Mark Williams (4.9 ppg) and Daniel Dingle (5.3 ppg) all see significant time off the bench.

Brown, in his third season at SMU, is very familiar with Philadelphia as he served as the 76ers head coach from 1997-2003.  While with the 76ers, he guided the team to the 2001 NBA Finals with Temple assistant Aaron McKie earning Sixth Man of The Year honors.

The Mustangs improved to 12-4 overall and 3-1 in The American with a 70-61 win at UCF . The Mustangs have won 10 of their last 11 games, with the lone loss during that stretch a 56-50 at Cincinnati on Jan. 3.

Like Temple, three SMU players average double figures with redshirt junior guard Nic Moore (14.6 ppg, 4.9 apg) leading the way.  Senior center Yanick Moreira (12.1 ppg) and sophomore guard Keith Frazier (10.8 ppg) also top double digits while sophomore forward Ben Moore (9,2 ppg) and Villanova transfer Markus Kennedy (8.2 ppg) are close behind.
