PHILADELPHIA - Temple men's basketball opens play in the new year by hosting UCF in its American Athletic Conference home opener Sunday (Noon/ESPNews/1210 AM WPHT). Fans bringing new, unwrapped toys to the game will receive $5 off their tickets.
The last time these teams met was the inaugural American Athletic Conference tournament when UCF avenged an OT loss to Temple in the regular season finale with a double overtime 94-90 victory in the opening round to end the Owls' season.
A different year and a different Temple team will host the Knights at the Liacouras Center where the Owls are a perfect 6-0 this season. Â
Temple (10-4, 1-0 American) enters the game winners of four straight, a streak that coincides with the arrival of transfers Jesse Morgan (UMass) and Devin Coleman (Clemson). Â Morgan, the reigning Conference Player of the Week, has made an immediate impact, leading the Owls in scoring (16.3 ppg.) while averaging four three-pointers per game. Â Coleman (6.3 ppg.) has come off the bench to give the team an offensive spark and another long-range threat (7-19 3-pt, 36.8%).
Junior Quenton DeCosey (14.2 ppg.) and senior co-captain Will Cummings (13.7 ppg., 4.1 apg,) provide head coach Fran Dunphy three double-figure scorers in the starting backcourt. Junior transfer Jaylen Bond (6.8 ppg., 7.5 rpg.) leads Temple and ranks third in the conference in rebounding while junior Devontae Watson  (2.1 ppg., 15 blocks) is a solid presence in the paint.
The Owls have a deep roster with sophomore Josh Brown (6.9 ppg.), redshirt sophomore Daniel Dingle (5.8 ppg.), sophomore Mark Williams (5.1 ppg.) and freshman Obi Enechionyia (4.1 ppg., 3.8 rpg,, 17 blocks) joining Coleman as reserves in the 10-man rotation.
UCF is 7-5 overall and coming off a narrow, 56-54 loss to Tulsa Wednesday in its conference opener. The Knights are a strong three-point shooting team, leading the league in three-point field goal percentage (.382) and ranking second with 6.9 three-pointers made per game.
Freshman guard B.J. Taylor leads the Knights with a 13.5 scoring average while another freshman, 6-6- guard Adonys Henriquez also is scoring in double figures (11.8 ppg.).
