Men's Basketball Looks To Snap Skid Thursday Against Houston
2.24.15 | Men's Basketball
PHILADELPHIA - Back from a tough two-game road swing to conference leaders #21 SMU and Tulsa, the Temple men's basketball team looks to get back to its winning ways Thursday at the Liacouras Center against Houston (7:00 pm/CBS Sports Network/1210 AM WPHT).
The Owls (19-9, 10-5 American) are 11-2 in their on-campus home, marking the program's seventh 10-win campaign in the venue over the last eight years. The Cherry and White will also be looking for its seventh 20-win season in that span and the 35th in the NCAA's sixth winningest progam's history.
Senior guard Will Cummings(13.7 ppg/4.1 apg), who has topped the team in scoring in each of the last four games, leads the Owl attack. Two other guards, senior Jesse Morgan (12.0 ppg) and junior Quenton DeCosey (12.1 ppg) also average double figures for head coach Fran Dunphy's team.
Junior Jaylen Bond (8.1 ppg, 8.5 rpg) leads the conference in rebounding and has been a key factor in the turnaround on the defensive end. The Owls have held opponents to 60.1 ppg, which is 18.0 ppg better than last season to rank second nationally in terms of differential from this season to last season.
Junior center Devontae Watson (2.5 ppg, 3.2 rpg) rounds out the starting five.
Sophomore guard Josh Brown (6.4 ppg) and freshman forward Obi Enechionyia (4.8 ppg, 3.4 rpg) lead a deep Owl bench that includes redshirt sophomore forward Daniel Dingle (4.2 ppg), sophomore forward Mark Williams (3.8 ppg) and junior Devin Coleman (3.3 ppg).
Houston (9-17, 1-13 American) won last year's two meetings, the first in the series between the teams. First year coach Kelvin Sampson, who has 509 career victories, will be looking to stop a six-game skid for the Cougars. The team's only conference win came at home against defending NCAA champion UConn, 70-68, on Feb. 1.
Redshirt junior Jherrod Stiggers leads the Cougars at 14.3 ppg.
During halftime of the game, 297 Temple student-athletes will be honored for achieving a grade-point average of 3.0 or above during the Fall 2014 semester. Among that number, which is 58.6 percent of all student-athletes at Temple, are 128 student-athletes with a GPA of 3.5 or above and an additional 17 with a perfect 4.0 GPA.
