Critical Conference Clash as Men's Basketball Hosts Cincinnati Tuesday
2.9.15 | Men's Basketball
PHILADELPHIA - Defense will be the name of the game Tuesday night when Cincinnati (17-6, 8-3 American) invades the Liacouras Center for a critical American Athletic Conference game against Temple (17-7, 8-3) . Tip-off is slated for 7:30 pm in this nationally-televised (CBS Sports Network) tilt between two teams tied for third place in the conference standings.Â
The Bearcats, under the direction of associate head coach Larry Davis, boast the best scoring defense (54.6 ppg) in The American and rank fifth nationally. UC has held its last seven opponents under 60 points, and its 27-game streak of holding foes under 70 is the top active streak in the country.
Temple's defense, which allowed 78.1 points per game last season, is holding opponents to just 60.4 points per game so far this year. That differential of 17.7 ppg currently ties for third among all teams in NCAA Division I. Â During its current five-game win streak, the longest active streak in the conference, the Owls have held each opponent under 70 points with three of the foes scoring less than 50.
Cincinnati was the last team to defeat Temple, winning easily (84-53) on Jan. 17 in the Queen City. Â The Owls played that game without senior co-captain Will Cummings. Â The Temple point guard was sidelined with a strained muscle in his left leg.
Cummings, who is tied with junior guard Quenton DeCosey for the team scoring lead (13.2 ppg), is back and healthy. Â Senior transfer Jesse Morgan (12.7 ppg) give head coach Fran Dunphy three players averaging double figures.
Junior forward Jaylen Bond (7.9 ppg, 8.0 rpg) continues to top the conference in rebounding while junior center Devontae Watson (2.4 ppg, 3.3 rpg) rounds out the starting five.
Freshman forward Obi Enechionyia (4.8 ppg), the Owls' top front court reserve, missed the Memphis win due to a sprained right ankle and is questionable for the Cincinnati game. Â Sophomore Josh Brown (6.1 ppg), the team's top reserve among a deep bench, proved his worth with a last-second jumper to defeat the Tigers Saturday.
Cincinnati is led in scoring by sophomore guard Troy Caupain with 10.2 ppg, followed closely by junior forward Octavius Ellis at 9.2 ppg. Ellis also leads the team with 7.2 rebounds per game.
The Bearcats lead the series, 17-6, and have won the last four meetings between the teams. Â The last Owl win in the series came on Feb. 20, 2000, when 15th-ranked Temple upset top-ranked Cincinnati, 77-69, on the Bearcats' home court.
