Track and Field Opens Outdoor Season at Philadelphia College Classic

PHILADELPHIA - Temple's track and field team opened their 2015 outdoor season at the Philadelphia College Classic on Saturday at the University of Pennsylvania's Franklin Field. The Owls saw multiple top-10 performances and personal bests set on the day.
In the 100m dash, sophomore Jimmia McCluskey earned a first-place finish with a personal-best time of 12.34 seconds. Junior Demeshia Davis placed second with a time of 12.59 and senior Hollis Coleman finished in 12.73 seconds for fourth place. Sophomore Bionca St. Fleur placed sixth (12.85) and junior Courtney Mitchell finished 10th (12.93).
Sophomore Simone Brownlee won the 100m hurdles in a time of 15.38 seconds. Two personal bests were set in the same event by sophomores Sydnee Jacques (15.94) and Simone Chapman (16.56).
Six athletes placed in the top 10 of the 200m dash. St. Fleur placed second (25.40), senior Kiersten LaRoche finished third (25.81), Davis placed fourth (25.86) and Coleman earned a fifth-place finish (26.06). Junior Imani Shell placed seventh with a time of 26.70 and McCluskey finished in 26.85, placing 10th.Â
In the 400m dash, sophomore Kenya Gaston finished first with a mark of 58.51 seconds. Senior Kaitlyn McSurdy placed third in the 400m hurdles in 1:06.19 and freshman Attallah Goodman finished fifth with a time of 1:08.40.
Another first-place finish was earned by the Owls' 4x400m relay team made up of Shell, St. Fleur, Coleman and Gaston with a time of 3:55.86. A third-place mark was recorded in the same event by Davis, LaRoche, Goodman and Jamila Janneh in 4:02.22 and a ninth-place finish by the relay team of Chapman, McSurdy, Brownlee, and Andrea Mathis with a time of 4:27.61.Â
Temple's 4x100m relay teams finished in first and second place. The team made up of McCluskey, St. Fleur, Davis and Mitchell finished in 47.22 and the second team of Shell, Jacques, LaRoche and Gaston had a mark of 48.42.
In field events, LaRoche set a personal best in the javelin with a distance of 32.65m. St. Fleur earned a first-place finish in the long jump with a mark of 5.43m. In the same event, McCluskey placed fourth (5.17m) and Shell finished sixth (4.94m). In the triple jump, Janneh placed second with a mark of 11.41m, Jacques finished third (11.36m) and Kennedi Van Eyken earned a fifth-place finish (10.65m).Â
The Owls will be back in action next weekend at the Maryland Invitational in College Park, Md. on March 28.
