Field Hockey Celebrates 2014 Season and Presents Awards at Annual Banquet
4.27.15 | Field Hockey
PHILADELPHIA - The 2014 Temple field hockey program celebrated a hugely successful season and honored a number of individuals at its annual banquet on April 26 at Edberg-Olson Hall. In addition to the team, many families were in attendance along with coaches and support staff.Â
Head coach Marybeth Freeman led the proceedings, which included honoring each class and handing out team awards. While Freeman has been at Temple for just a month, she guided the Owls through their spring season and was given praise by team members for the positive impact she has already made.Â
First, second, third and fourth-year letterwinners received gifts of blankets, letterwinner jackets, watches and framed letters, respectively.Â
The first individual award of the afternoon went to freshman Rachael Mueller, named Most Improved after her first full fall and spring seasons with the Owls. Next up was the Sportsmanship Award, given to junior Alyssa Hughes for her positive attitude and conduct both on and off the field. Junior Sarah Deck, known for her work ethic and determination on the field and in the weight room, was given the Hustler Award.
Senior and NFHCA All-Region First Team selection Lizzy Millen earned the Team's Defensive Most Valuable Player Award. Senior and First Team All-American Amber Youtz was named the Team's Offensive Most Valuable Player. Both athletes were also named to the BIG EAST First Team among numerous other honors garnered throughout the season.
For their work in the classroom, senior Nicole Kroener and junior Amanda Fuertsch were co-winners of the Owl Club Academic Award.
The 6th Annual Randy Lokey Memorial Award, presented annually to a deserving TUFH fan or parent who has demonstrated faithful support and positive enthusiasm for the program, was given to Cherifa Howarth. Howarth, a 1998 graduate and standout for the program, has proven to be one of the Owls' most dedicated fans as well as a generous donor.Â
Each of the Owls' three graduating seniors, Kroener, Millen and Youtz, were honored individually for their many career achievements. They were then sereneded by redshirt juniors Haley Mitchell (vocals) and Rachel Steinman (guitar) to the tune of Frozen's "Let it Go."
The 2014 team was nationally ranked for nearly the entire season, finishing with a record of 14-7 and advancing to the BIG EAST Championship game.Â
