PHILADELPHIA - Temple University head field hockey coach Marybeth Freeman has announced the hiring of Roz Ellis as associate head coach of the program. Ellis, who has six years of experience coaching collegiate field hockey, comes to Temple from the University of Louisville where she spent the 2014 season.
"Roz's energy toward the game, knowledge of hockey and her ability to convey coaching ideas in a variety of ways makes her a valuable asset to our staff," said Freeman. "Her successful playing history and dedication to overall student-athlete development will provide our athletes opportunities to be successful in the classroom and on the field. She is an educator of the game and dedicated to strengthening our players' tactical awareness and technical foundation. She has quickly bought into the new, high-energy and practical hockey philosophy we are instilling in our student-athletes. We welcome Roz back to Pennsylvania and look forward to the great things that lie ahead with her being a part of the TUFH staff."
While at Louisville, Ellis's duties as assistant coach included serving as the director of recruiting, assisting with practice and game day preparation, and assisting in developing relationships within the field hockey community. The Cardinals earned an at-large berth to the NCAA Tournament in 2014 and finished the season with a record of 15-6 in their first year as a member of the ACC.
"I am excited to start a new chapter with Marybeth and the Temple Field Hockey program," said Ellis. "The Owls have an amazing academic and athletic foundation and I look forward to helping with the continuation of their success both on and off the field. I'd like to thank Senior Associate Athletic Director Joe Giunta and Marybeth for this amazing opportunity. I am excited to collaborate with Marybeth and take Temple on an exciting new journey."
Prior to her stint at Louisville, Ellis spent three seasons as an assistant coach at the University of Massachusetts, coaching against Temple back when the Owls were a member of the Atlantic 10 Conference. During her time at UMass, she helped guide the Minutewomen to two A-10 titles and NCAA tournament appearances. In 2013, UMass advanced to the NCAA round of eight for the first time since 2000.
Ellis served as a volunteer assistant coach at Wake Forest in 2010 and helped lead the Demon Deacons to an NCAA tournament appearance. She began her coaching career at Appalachian State, where she was an assistant coach in 2009. Following the 2009 season, Ellis took her playing and coaching skills to Dublin, Ireland, where she competed for the Old Alexandra Field Hockey Club.
From 2006-2011, Ellis participated in the U.S. Field Hockey Women's National Championship Tournament and helped capture the title with her HPC regional team (New Jersey) in 2011. She holds a USA Level II coaching certificate and was named 2012 New England Futures Regional Head Coach.
Ellis is a graduate of the University of Iowa, where she earned NFHCA All-America Second Team and All-West Region First Team honors. As a senior, she was named to the NCAA All-Tournament team after she helped lead the 2008 Hawkeyes to an NCAA semifinal appearance. The two-time All-Big Ten First Team and three-time Big Ten Championship Team member was also successful in the classroom as a two-time All-Big Ten Academic Team selection.
The Lewisburg, Pa., native earned her bachelor's degree in English from Iowa in 2009.
