Belgian Striker Charlotte de Cuyper Recruited to Join Nationally Ranked Field Hockey Team in 2015

PHILADELPHIA - First-year Temple field hockey head coach Marybeth Freeman has added one more student-athlete to the Owls' 2015 roster, recruiting Belgian player and striker Charlotte de Cuyper. De Cuyper, who hails from the province of Antwerp, has played for the premier Braxgata Hockey Club in Belgium for the past six years, and was the top scorer on both the U16 and U19 teams.

De Cuyper, who will join four freshmen recruits out of Pennsylvania in the fall, is the first Temple field hockey recruit from overseas in 23 years. She's been playing the sport since the age of eight and has had much success both with the Braxgata club and her Antwerp provincial team. In addition to playing as a striker for the Owls, she also has experience in both attack and defense penalty corners.

"It has always been my dream to study and play hockey in the USA," said de Cuyper. "It was clear to me that at Temple my dream could come true, that I could play hockey at the top level, study public relations and live in a beautiful city. Having the opportunity to attend Temple is an amazing feeling!"

With the U19 Braxgata team in 2013-14 and the U16 team in 2012-13, de Cuyper advanced to the championship play-offs in the province. She was the leading scorer for the club in both of those seasons. In 2009-10 and 2010-11, de Cuyper was selected to the provincial team in Antwerp, made up of the top 16 players in the province.

In her first appearance with the Antwerp team, de Cuyper helped the team to a championship among the 10 provinces. The following year, Antwerp placed third.
