PHILADELPHIA - Temple field hockey head coach Marybeth Freeman has announced the hiring of Katie Gerzabek as an assistant coach for the nationally ranked Owls. Gerzabek is a 2015 graduate of the University of Maryland, where she was a four-year standout for the powerhouse Terrapins.
Gerzabek was a freshman starter on Maryland's 2011 NCAA Championship team, scoring the first of three goals in the Terrapins' 3-2 overtime comeback win against North Carolina. She was named to the NFHCA All-Region First Team that season as well as in 2014, and earned second team honors in 2012 and 2013. As a senior and team captain in 2014, Gerzabek helped lead the Terps to a regular season Big Ten Championship. She capped her career with NFHCA Third Team All-America honors after also earning All-Big Ten Second Team and All-Big Ten Academic Team selection.
Gerzabek was a member of both the U21 and U19 teams for USA Field Hockey and has been coaching at various levels over the last four years. While playing with two US Junior National Teams, Gerzabek garnered a good deal of international experience. She competed in the Junior World Cup in Germany as a member of the U21 team in 2013, and scored a goal as Team USA earned the bronze medal at the Junior Pan Am Games in Mexico in 2012.
"Katie comes to Temple with tremendous successes and experiences at the collegiate and national levels," said Freeman. "Not only does she thrive in competitive environments but she is a teacher by nature. Her top-caliber skills and her tenacious attitude in the front field will provide our student-athletes with hands-on skill development and visual aids. We couldn't be happier to add Katie to the staff!"
Since November of 2013, Gerzabek has served as the U16 head coach and U19 assistant coach for the Washington Wolves Field Hockey Club in Rockville, Md. During the spring seasons in 2012, 2013 and 2015, Gerzabek coached at three different levels for the USA Field Hockey Futures Program and earned her Level 1 Coaching Certification.
"I am extremely excited and thankful that Marybeth and Temple have allowed me the opportunity to be a part of the Temple field hockey program," said Gerzabek. "I am looking forward to embarking on this new path and journey with the team. I can't wait to get started!"
Gerzabek was involved with Maryland's Student-Athlete Advisory Committee for two years, serving as Vice President for Social Media and Public Relations as a senior. She also served as a coach for The Grass Roots Project from January of 2015 until her graduation. The program is a student-athlete run organization that educates at-risk youth from Washington, D.C., about HIV/AIDS awareness and prevention, using sport and physical activity to convey prevention messages.
