Haley Mitchell Named BIG EAST Field Hockey Defensive Player of the Week

8.31.15 | Field Hockey

NEW YORK - The first BIG EAST Field Hockey Defensive Player of the Week Award of the 2015 season has been given to Temple senior Haley Mitchell after a strong opening weekend in goal for the Owls. Senior forward Tricia Light and senior midfielder Sarah Deck also earned BIG EAST recognition, each getting named to the Weekly Honor Roll.

Mitchell began her senior campaign by posting a career-high eight saves against No. 3 Maryland on Aug. 28, keeping Temple in the game against the Terrapins in what ultimately ended in a 4-2 defeat. Two days later, Mitchell added one more save to her weekend total in the Owls' 9-0 rout of Towson. She played the complete game against Maryland, and all but seven minutes in helping earn a team shutout against Towson.

Light scored one of the Owls' two goals in their hard-fought loss to Maryland before adding another goal and an assist in the dominating Towson victory. Deck led all players with a pair of goals against Towson while also recording an assist.

The Owls, now 1-1 overall, will be back on the field at #7 Penn State on Friday, Sept. 4.
