Field Hockey Drops Road Game at #18 Delaware

9.11.15 | Field Hockey

NEWARK, Del. - After falling behind early, Temple field hockey could never quite catch up to the #18 Delaware Blue Hens on Friday night, and lost the road game by a score of 7-4. The Owls, now 2-3 overall, have seen all of their losses come against ranked opponents.

Delaware stays unbeaten for the season at 5-0 after moving into the Top 20 poll earlier this week. The Blue Hens' Michaela Patzner completed a hat trick on the evening, including two goals on penalty strokes against the Owls.

Senior Sarah Deck scored twice for Temple, putting her at a team-leading five goals for the season.

"It was a hard-fought game between two talented teams," said Temple head coach Marybeth Freeman. "I was pleased to see how our midfield was able to connect with our front field players, and I thought our counter-attack was the most dangerous its been this season. I think we did a very good job of putting pressure on them but they were able to capitalize on the opportunities they did get in our front field."

The Blue Hens' Lisa Giezeman scored eight minutes into the game, and Patzner added a second for Delaware on her first penalty stroke in the 11th minute. From there, Temple was able to answer Delaware's goals for much of the game, but the Owls were never able to tie.

Deck found her own rebounded shot on a corner play in the 18th minute and got it past Delaware goalkeeper Emmeline Oltmans to get the Owls on the board. With just over five minutes left in the half, Delaware scored on a corner to go back up by two, but the Owls had another answer before the break.

Redshirt sophomore Sarah Keer tipped in a shot by Hattie Kuhns from five yards out to bring Temple within a goal at halftime, 3-2.

Delaware's Esmee Peet scored twice for her team in the first 11 minutes of the second half, but after the first, Temple sophomore Rachael Mueller tipped in an Alyssa Delp shot to keep the Owls within one. After Peet's second goal, the Owls got their final answer on a direct penalty corner goal from Deck, with assists from seniors Tricia Light and Rachel Steinman.

That corner goal in the 52nd minute would be Temple's last, while the Blue Hens put two more into the cage, both from Patzner.

Both teams registered a defensive save in the contest, with Temple's coming from senior Taylor Shronk. Goalkeeper Haley Mitchell made five saves for the Owls, while Oltmans finished with two for Delaware. The Owls had only one fewer corner opportunity with six to Delaware's seven, but they were out-shot 16-10 overall.

"Percentage-wise, from circle entries to getting a shot, corner or goal, I think that was the most productive we've been in all our games," said Freeman. "I was happy to see the attack generation up front. I also think our backfield players did quite well. Kayla Laughman stepped up and Hattie Kuhns played the best I've seen her play. She did a great job using her speed and was very tactically sound."

Temple will now look ahead to its next game, a 1 pm home contest against Penn on Sunday, Sept. 13.
