Men's Basketball Heads to Memphis on Wednesday Night

1.12.16 | Men's Basketball

PHILADELPHIA - Looking for its third win in a row, Temple men's basketball travels to American Athletic Conference foe Memphis on Wednesday, Jan. 13 for an 8:00 p.m (ET) contest. The game will air on CBS Sports Network as well as on 1210 AM WPHT.

Headlines
• Temple has won four of its last five, including two road games over Top 25 teams, and is coming off a 78-60 home win against East Carolina on Jan. 9.
• This season marks the first since 1998 that the Owls have beaten two Top 25 opponents on the road.
• Senior Quenton DeCosey led Temple with 24 points in the ECU win, which saw the Owls make a 21-4 run in the second half. Temple made a season-best 13 three-pointers, with DeCosey and senior Devin Coleman hitting five apiece.
• For his efforts in leading the Owls their recent two wins, DeCosey was named the American Athletic Conference Player of the Week on Jan. 11. He is the first Temple player to earn in the honor so far in 2015-16.
• The Owls' 55-53 win at #23/24 UConn on Jan. 5 was the 200th win for head coach Fran Dunphy in his 10 seasons at Temple. He is now one of just five Division I coaches with 200 or more wins at two different schools, while also taking each school to six or more NCAA Tournaments.
• With 511 wins, Dunphy is just six wins away from surpassing former Owl coach John Chaney and becoming the all-time winningest coach in Philadelphia Big 5 history.
• Junior point guard Josh Brown hit a jumper in the lane with 2.6 seconds left in the UConn win. It was the second time Brown has hit a late shot for the win, also doing so in a 61-60 victory at Memphis last season.
• The Owls have just one loss in their last five games, a 77-50 home defeat by Houston on Jan. 2. It was one of only three 20-point losses at the Liacouras Center in Dunphy's tenure.
• On Dec. 29 the Owls won 77-70 at #22/23 Cincinnati in their American Athletic Conference opener. The wins at Cincinnati and UConn mark the program's ninth season in a row with at least one victory over a Top 25 team.
• Four players reached double figures in scoring in both the UConn and Cincinnati wins, led by DeCosey with 19 points against the Bearcats and 15 points against the Huskies.
• Senior forward Jaylen Bond notched his 10th career double-double and fourth of the season at UConn, adding a game-high 10 rebounds to 11 points.
• Temple hit a season-high 30 free throws (30-of-38, 78.9 percent) in its win against Delaware State on Dec. 19, with DeCosey making 12-of-15 and Brown hitting a perfect 8-of-8. DeCosey recorded his third career double-double in the victory, adding a career-high 12 rebounds to a team-best 20 points.
• As a team, the Owls are ranked second in the nation in fewest turnovers per game at 9.0. They have recorded single digit turnovers in nine of 14 games, tallying as few as five (vs. Delaware on 11/29).
• DeCosey is Temple's leading scorer this season with 15.6 points per game, ranking fifth in the American Athletic Conference, and has scored in double figures in 12 of 14 contests.
• Memphis is coming off an 81-78 loss at #23/24 UConn, the second loss in three games for the Tigers. Freshman guard Dedric Lawson and senior guard Ricky Tarrant, Jr. lead Memphis with 14.1 ppg. Lawson and senior forward Shaq Goodwin average 8.4 and 8.3 rebounds per game, respectively, ranking sixth and seventh in The American.

Temple vs. Memphis
• Temple and Memphis are meeting for the 15th time and for the fifth time in the last 14 years.
• The teams last met in the 2015 American Athletic Conference Tournament Quarterfinals on March 13, with Temple winning 80-75 to advance. The win was the 500th career victory for head coach Fran Dunphy.
• Memphis was one of two conference teams the Owls met just once in the 2014-15 regular season. Temple won that meeting at Memphis on a Josh Brown buzzer-beater by a score of 61-60 on Feb. 7.
• The Tigers won both meetings in the inaugural season of the American Athletic Conference in 2013-14, getting a 79-69 win in Philadelphia on Jan. 11 and edging the Owls 82-79 in overtime on Feb. 22 in Memphis.
• Memphis had won four straight prior to this season's earlier meeting, including a 78-77 victory in the NIT Semifinals at Madison Square Garden on March 26, 2002.

Loaded Schedule
Temple faced Top 25 teams in three of its first four games for the first time in program history. Twice before, in 1990-91 and 1993-94, the Owls faced ranked teams in three of their first five games. The Owls now have two wins over Top 25 teams, both coming in the last four games. On Dec. 29, Temple won 77-70 at #22/23 Cincinnati, and on Jan. 5 the Owls edged out #23/24 UConn, 55-53. This season now marks the ninth in a row in which Temple has a win over a Top 25 team.

Three of Temple's six losses have come to teams that were ranked in the Top 25 at the time of the game (#1/1 North Carolina, #22/20 Butler and #16/16 Utah) with another coming on the road against 2015 NCAA finalist Wisconsin. The combined won-loss record of all six teams the Owls have lost to is 73-23 (.760).

Six Wins To History
